Kuchipudi en Lumiere

Haleem Khan, a dynamic young man is bringing Kuchipudi, the classical dance form of Andhra Pradesh to Lamakaan.

This MBA graduate was trained in Kuchipudi from a tender age and has given more than 300 performances in India and abroad. He has a number of excellent experimental choreographies to his credit.

One of his creations, “Mélange of Dances” (an experimental dance ballet) merging Western Classical Dance with Kuchipudi was supported by the Alliance Francaise and the French Embassy. This program toured major cities in India and met with great appreciation and applause.

He conducted a workshop on fusion of Kuchipudi with Flamenco, along with the famous Spanish dancer Ms Maria Pages and her team.

Among many others, he choreographed & performed “A fusion of Kuchipudi and Thai traditional dance Khon and Lakon Nai” along with a team from Thailand.

In this process, Haleem Khan has proved how innovative one can be while not crossing the boundaries of tradition. His creations reflect this philosophy. Relating to the contemporary while respecting old world values, being modern in outlook and conventional in thought has become a way of life for him.

Through his dedication to the art and passion for what he believes in, Haleem Khan has broken the shackles of religion, language and creed setting an example to the Young India.

True to the tradition of Kuchipudi, Haleem Khan dons the role of female characters, though occasionally, but whenever he does, he enriches the character with his graceful movements and feminine charm. It’s hard to tell when he dances as Satya Bhama that it is the same modern, jean clad young man who is no different from guys of his generation! As a male dancer his art is most vibrant while his vigour and vitality are unrestrained.

Haleem Khan is going to regale the Lamakaan audience with his versatile presentation, switching roles from female to male. His unique dance style is something really worth looking forward to!!

About the founders of Aakruti Kathak Kendra

Aakruti Kathak Kendra was founded by Mangala Bhatt and Raghav Raj Bhatt in 1992, the first of its kind in South India to nurture talent, preserve and spread the rich folk traditions of India.
Born into a family of artists dedicated to preserving and spreading the rich traditions of India, Raghav Raj inherited dance from his illustrious father Dr Gopal Raj Bhatt, a well-known name in folk and tribal arts in India. Raghav was initiated into dance at the tender age of 5 and was soon drawn to Kathak. Raghav received training from the living maestro Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj. He was also a recipient of National Scholarship from the Government of India and the Central Sangeet Natak Academy, New Delhi. Raghav has traveled and performed widely in India and abroad and has received critical acclaim.
The subtle interplay between form, colourand rhythm is his hallmark and works a lasting influence on a wondering mind. He was also a faculty at Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society, Singapore.
Petite, doe eyed and exquisitely graceful, Mangala performs with restrained refinement that comes from a total awareness of the space that she inhabits. Entering the artistic precincts of Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, Mangala took training under the Kathak maestro late Pandit Durga Lal from whom she absorbed his brilliant technique and mastered the dazzling cadence and subtle nuances of Kathak.
Mangala dances in tandem with her husband Raghav, bringing to the rasika the very best traditions of Kathak. She is hailed as a dancer with a grip over laya. Raghav Raj and Mangala Bhatt have participated in numerous shows in India and abroad.
