The Right to Education Act 2009 – Fulfillment of the Fundamental Right or Mere Formality?

A Talk and Discussion led by Simantini Dhuru  & K Chandra Mouli at Lamakaan,on Friday Aug 6th @ 7  PM
Fifty years after the Constitutional Directive the fundamental right to education has finally materialized as a Law. Will the ‘Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009’ (RTE Act 2009); genuinely address the dimensions of quality, quantity and equity – or will this remain the elusive triangle it has been thus far?

Simantini Dhuru has been active in education since more than 20 years. As the Director of the Avehi-Abacus Project, her work in the Mumbai Municipal Schools has contributed in redefining issues of quality and equity. As a consultant-member at NCERT and Executive Council Member for National Mission of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan she has made vital contribution at the national level. She is deeply involved in the struggle to repeal and reform the Right to Education Act 2009 through the platform of the ‘All India forum for Right to Education’ (AIF-RTE). She has also made documentary films with national and international acclaim.

A talk on Effect of Music on Mind followed by Jazz Performance

An Exploration… The Effect of Music on the Mind followed by a Jazz Performance at Lamakaan on Sunday, 25th July at 7 pm.

This is an event being organized by the Hyderabad Western Music Forum.  Entry is open to all. Entry fee is Rs100 for non members and Rs 50 for members.

It is going to be an unusual evening, where research scholars in music from Finland, will present their findings on how Music effects the mind and the senses. The presentation will be audio visual. Then, their Professor, an experienced jazz pianist, will play jazz standards on piano accompanied by bass and drums. Petri Toiviainen is the founder and head of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Research, Jyvaskyla, Finland.

His research interests include music cognition, music information retrieval, and

music motorics. Within these areas, he focuses on modelling of music perception, computational analysis of musical structure, and kinetics of

music-related movement.

Petri Toiviainen – Keyboard/Piano

Petri Toiviainen is a seasoned jazz pianist. With his Combo, he has played

at jazz festivals in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Germany and Canada.

He has also performed with trumpeters Ted Curson (USA) and

Palle Mikkelborg (Denmark) as well as vocalist Anita Wardell (UK).

Bernard Genevois - Electric Bass

Bernard Genevois is from France and is stationed In Hyderabad at present.

An engineer by profession, he has been playing electric bass guitar and double bass in French jazz and rock bands and has done concerts with a many good musicians.

Kartik Kalyan – Drums

Kartik is originally from Hyderabad, works with an IT company and travels extensively. He performs as part of a Piano drums Jazz Duo. He has a very good jazz sensibility with percussive drive and swing.
