"Raja Karthikeya is a former international civil servant, writer and international affairs commentator. He is currently Head of West Asia studies at Takshashila Institution.

Previously, over a 15 yr career in the UN, he served in Afghanistan on inter-ethnic trust building and national unity government formation; in Iraq, he led frontline advocacy for protection of civilians during the counter IS IS operations; in Iran, he served as the Un's spokesperson during multiple crises; he also served on the palestine and Peacekeeping policy planning teams.

He was a Research Fellow at Oxford University's Center for the Changing Character of War; and is the recipient of his alma mater, Georgetown University's Centennial Award for leadership and public service. To raise awareness about climate action, He became the first Indian to cross the Arctic and Antarctic circles in a year. He has been awarded Indian and Swiss government commendations for his rescue work after the 2004 tsunami and 2001 Bhuj earthquake. As a volunteer, he led the project that created India's first covid resilient village during the Delta Wave. He is currently Adjunct Fellow and Head of West Asia studies at Takshashila Institution.

The evening will feature the release of "Aaj Rachyo Hai Basant Nijam Ghar", a beautifully illustrated Hindi book by acclaimed filmmaker, author, and archivist Yousuf Saeed. A Night of Knowing Nothing is set around the 2015 student strike at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where students launched a 139-day protest against the Modi government's appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as the institute's chairman. The Babul Eco Film Festival (BEFF) is an international environmental film festival organized by Babul Films Society NGO, a Hyderabad-based non-profit organization founded in 2012. BEFF is recognized as Hyderabad and South India’s first international environmental film festival, dedicated to promoting environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development through the power of cinema. The festival is held across multiple venues in Hyderabad and is timed around World Environment Day, bringing together filmmakers, students, environmentalists, and audiences from India and around the world.

About the festival

BEFF showcases a diverse selection of documentaries, short films, animations, and experimental works that explore themes such as climate change, wildlife, forests, water, indigenous communities, pollution, sustainability, ecological justice, and the relationship between people and nature. In addition to film screenings, the festival hosts panel discussions, seminars, masterclasses, filmmaker interactions, and eco-themed activities, creating a platform for dialogue, education, and collaboration.


The festival believes that “when people see, they feel; when they feel, they act.” By using storytelling and visual media, BEFF aims to inspire individuals and communities to become more environmentally conscious and actively participate in protecting the planet. Selected films continue to be screened beyond the festival dates through outreach programs in schools, colleges, cultural spaces, and community venues, extending the impact of each film to wider audiences.

The programme will be divided into two parts:

Part I: Character Readings / Monologues (30–45 minutes)
A series of dramatic readings based on selected stories from Punarutthanam, bringing some of the collection’s most memorable characters and moments to life.

Part II: Panel Discussion – Dalit Literature Canon (60 minutes)
A moderated conversation on the place of Dalit literature in shaping contemporary literary and political discourse.
