Qutb Shahi Tombs: Heritage Restoration by Ratish Nanda, CEO, Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Heritage restoration is often a topic of heartbreak in Hyderabad. However, if there has been any visible change on that front, it is at the Qutb Shahi tombs, the royal necropolis where the Golconda kings and founders of Hyderabad were laid to rest. The ongoing work in the complex has been a much-needed respite from the usual apathy that Hyderabadis witness with regard to the city’s heritage.

Undertaken by the Telangana department of Archaeology and Museums and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) some years ago, the work at the Qutb Shahi tombs has brought about visible (and much needed) change and stability to the heritage monuments, some of which were in a precarious situation. Using archival imagines and artisans who were specifically brought to Hyderabad for this work, the structures have been revived by expert conservation architects. So how did they undertake this monumental task?

To understand that, and to throw light on the extensive work that has been taken up, we bring to you talk by the very person in charge of it all – Ratish Nanda, the CEO of the AKTC. Nanda, who has been with the AKTC for two decades, is also the man behind the restoration of (Mughal emperor) Babur’s tomb in Afghanistan. The AKTC has also taken up other major restoration works in the country like the Humayun’s tomb and the Sunder nursery in New Delhi.

Siyasi Muslims
A Story of Political Islams in India
Overview :- How do we make sense of the Muslims of India?
Do they form a political community?
Does the imagined conflict between Islam and modernity affect the Muslims' political behaviour in this country?
Are Muslim religious institutions-mosques and madrasas-directly involved in politics?
Do they instruct the community to vote strategically in all elections?
What are 'Muslim issues'?
Is it only about triple talaq?
Are Muslims truly nationalists? Or do they continue to remain just an 'other' in India?
While these questions intrigue us, we seldom debate to find pragmatic answers to these queries. Examining the everydayness of Muslims in contemporary India, Hilal Ahmed offers an evocative story of politics and Islam in India, which goes beyond the given narratives of Muslim victimhood and Islamic separation.

Hilal Ahmed is Associate Professor and works on political Islam, Muslim modernities/ representation, and politics of symbols in South Asia. His book Muslim Political Discourse in Postcolonial India: Monuments, Memory, Contestation (Routledge 2014), looks at these thematic concerns to make sense of the nature of contemporary Muslim political discourse.
Hilal Ahmed's SIYASI MUSLIMS by Penguin will be released by

MOVIE SCREENING-PATHER PANCHALI
Tue May 7, 7:30 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Movie Screening - Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray

Pather Panchali is Ray's debut film, and the first film of his 'The Apu Triology'

The time is early twentieth century, a remote village in Bengal. The film deals with a Brahmin family, a priest - Harihar, his wife Sarbajaya, daughter Durga, and his aged cousin Indir Thakrun - struggling to make both ends meet.

Pather Panchali has a universal humanist appeal. Though the film deals with the grim struggle for survival by a poor family, it has no trace melodrama. What is projected in stead is the respect for human dignity.

The sequences of Apu and elder sister Durga, exploring their little world and sharing secrets are most remarkable aspect of the film. These include the scenes of - discovery of train by Durga and Apu in field of white Kash flowers, the candy seller sequence, and Indir Thakrun's death.

The film develops its characters and the atmosphere slowly and resolutely. The narrative builds up to a powerful climax as we begin to empathise with the characters.

MOVIE SCREENING-AGANTUK
Thu May 9, 7:30 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Agantuk (the stranger) is the last film by Satyajit Ray. Like most of Rays films, Agantuk has as well the reputation to be non-cinematic.We are introduced to the characters of the film like we are introduced to a bengali middle class family. Subindhra Bose, his wife Anila and their small boy Satyaki are surprised by a letter addressed to Anila. It comes from a person called Manmohan Mitra who is Anilas uncle and only living relative but her childhood memory in him is very blurred. He announces his visit to the family of Bose.Subindhra is skeptical, because he thinks this uncle could be as well an imposter intending to get his hands on Anilas inheritance. Anila expresses slight reservations against her uncle but her face reflects already affection for this humorous and intelligent man. But The heart of their son has already been won unconditionally by Mitra.Very early the film offers three possibilities to look at this strange uncle: the skepticism of Subhindra, this pending between longing and affection of Anila and finally the unprejudiced attitude of the boy. Amidst all these perceptions, the film slowly moves "closer to the truth"

Topi Ki Dastaan
Sat May 11, 7:30 PM
Wings Cultural Society

Topi Ki Daastan is based on a famous and popular Hindi novel Topi Shukla, written in the early sixties by Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza. It has been adapted by Wings Cultural Society in the ‘Dastaan Narration Form’. Through storytelling we have tried to recreate the turbulence between ‘ Topi’ and ‘Iffan’, the main characters, they are childhood friends who have grown up in an independent cultural environment before the great divide that was the result of the creation of the two nations. The entire scenario is created through dialogues in the truest format. This “Dastaan” is an attempt to reinvent those feelings of fear and horror between the two main communities which were affected.
It revolves around TOPI who is an embodiment of chaos in the post independent era. The “Dastaan” highlights the circumstances of two nations existing within the one nation. Topi a Hindu by faith questions the formation of Pakistan and is a mirror image of the mindset of his times, which also becomes a reflection of the present day scenario.

MOVIE SCREENING - CHARULATA
Thu May 16, 7:30 PM
HYDERABAD CINEPHILES
Satyajit Ray's film Charulata is based on Rabindranath Tagore's story The Broken Nest. The setting of story is of Calcutta in British India. Charulata is the bored, artistic, cultured, much younger wife of a newspaper editor and proprietor who prides himself on being a bold free-thinker. His charming young cousin, a would-be writer called Amal comes to stay and Amal and Charulata take an interest in each other's literary aspirations as well as in each other generally. The delicate pathos and subtle comedy of their romance is a joy, and there is wonderful audacity in the way Ray shows Charulata's life at the beginning while simply looking out of the window, studying the passersby with the engaged curiosity of a true artist. This film is a boost for the mind and heart.

Barua's classic adultery story tells of an artist, Prasanta (Barua) presented in the stereotypically romantic image dedicated to his vocation, paying no heed to his scandalous reputation (he paints nude models) and with a cavalier attitude to his conservative father-in-law's (Choudhury) demands for good social behaviour. He is married to the rich Chitra (Kanan Devi). The couple are in love but neither partner is prepared to compromise their ideals. The marriage falls apart. Prasanta concedes his wife demand for a divorce and goes to the jungles of Assam, where for many years his closest associates are a wild elephant and Jharna (Menaka), the wife of an innkeeper named Pahari (P. Mullick). He also makes a sworn enemy of a local trader (Nawab/A. Mullick). Chitra marries the millionaire Bipul (Mukherjee) and they go on an elephant hunt. They kill Prasanta's pet elephant. Since Chitra believes Prasanta to be dead he avoids meeting her, but he is forced to rescue her from the vilainous trader. Prasanta succeeds but dies at Chitra's feet. The film interprets his death as Chitra's final achievement of the freedom she had craved. Barua contrasts the regressive story presented as static and unresolved, both as narrative and performance, with a hyperactive environment that overwhelms the trivial nature of the lead couples' desires. There are many sequence shots tracking through walls - including the justly celebrated 'psychological' opening shot as Prasanta walks through one door after another until he reaches his studio, and from interior to exterior, while nature is exemplified by mountains, trees, wind and charging elephants. This was one of the first elaborate filmic uses of Tagore's lyrics, with the poet's original tunes (Sahar range rang, Mesa te bobe. Tar biday belar malakhani), but one of the film's big hits, Diner sheshe ghumer deshe, was composed originally for the film by Mullick.

The film will be introduced by Aparajita Roy Sinha, Film Critique

Movie Analysis by Reelistic MC
Sat May 25, 3:00 PM
Raghuveer Raju Boosa
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Birjees Qadar Ka Kunba
Sat May 25, 7:30 PM
Nibha Theatre Ensemble
The play ‘Birjees Qadar Ka Kunba’ is the Indian adaptation by Raghuvir Sahay, of the original Spanish play ‘The House of Bernada Alba’ written by the revolutionary genius of Spanish theatre, Federico Garcia Lorca in the year 1936, who brought vivid and tragic poetry to the stage with his powerful dramas. Birjees, a tyrannical matriarch rules over her house and five daughters, cruelly crushing their hopes and needs. The play eloquently deals with culture of deprivation and denial that manifests itself in violence and hostility which is synonymous with the repression suffered by women in rural or small town women in Indian context till this date. The tragedy of virginity is persistent across cultural boundaries and sexual and social freedom continues to be a never ending struggle.

We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional).
