Write Club Saturday General #201
Sat May 18, 3:00 PM
Write Club Hyderabad
Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM

Studio: New Theatres

Barua's classic adultery story tells of an artist, Prasanta (Barua) presented in the stereotypically romantic image dedicated to his vocation, paying no heed to his scandalous reputation (he paints nude models) and with a cavalier attitude to his conservative father-in-law's (Choudhury) demands for good social behaviour. He is married to the rich Chitra (Kanan Devi). The couple are in love but neither partner is prepared to compromise their ideals. The marriage falls apart. Prasanta concedes his wife demand for a divorce and goes to the jungles of Assam, where for many years his closest associates are a wild elephant and Jharna (Menaka), the wife of an innkeeper named Pahari (P. Mullick). He also makes a sworn enemy of a local trader (Nawab/A. Mullick). Chitra marries the millionaire Bipul (Mukherjee) and they go on an elephant hunt. They kill Prasanta's pet elephant. Since Chitra believes Prasanta to be dead he avoids meeting her, but he is forced to rescue her from the vilainous trader. Prasanta succeeds but dies at Chitra's feet. The film interprets his death as Chitra's final achievement of the freedom she had craved. Barua contrasts the regressive story presented as static and unresolved, both as narrative and performance, with a hyperactive environment that overwhelms the trivial nature of the lead couples' desires. There are many sequence shots tracking through walls - including the justly celebrated 'psychological' opening shot as Prasanta walks through one door after another until he reaches his studio, and from interior to exterior, while nature is exemplified by mountains, trees, wind and charging elephants. This was one of the first elaborate filmic uses of Tagore's lyrics, with the poet's original tunes (Sahar range rang, Mesa te bobe. Tar biday belar malakhani), but one of the film's big hits, Diner sheshe ghumer deshe, was composed originally for the film by Mullick.

The film will be introduced by Aparajita Roy Sinha, Film Critique

Birjees Qadar Ka Kunba
Sat May 25, 7:30 PM
Nibha Theatre Ensemble
The play ‘Birjees Qadar Ka Kunba’ is the Indian adaptation by Raghuvir Sahay, of the original Spanish play ‘The House of Bernada Alba’ written by the revolutionary genius of Spanish theatre, Federico Garcia Lorca in the year 1936, who brought vivid and tragic poetry to the stage with his powerful dramas. Birjees, a tyrannical matriarch rules over her house and five daughters, cruelly crushing their hopes and needs. The play eloquently deals with culture of deprivation and denial that manifests itself in violence and hostility which is synonymous with the repression suffered by women in rural or small town women in Indian context till this date. The tragedy of virginity is persistent across cultural boundaries and sexual and social freedom continues to be a never ending struggle.

Water is coming (ForEarth)
Tue Jun 4, 7:00 PM
Adrien SELLES and Sylvain FERRANT
India is facing multiple challenges in terms of water use. Major river dams have been built in the 80s to secure the expected fast growing domestic demand. Those infrastructures are now outdated and nowadays Indian megacities have to face both severe domestic water shortages and a steady water demand growth expected for the next decades. This discussion aims to propose an involvment of all the citizens to monitor their water resource. It is crucial to sensibilize the water users.

Developped in collaboration with scientists, the ForEarth system demonstrates an easy access to monitoring and warning related to water supplies for irrigation and consumption around the city and Hyderabad in the state of Telangana in India. Using satellites images combined with machine learning, a precise monitoring of the water resource is possible via smartphone.

This service is in easy access, free and data responsable. With this service, we want to rise the involvment of all water users and share the experience of water consumptions at different level during an open discussion.

This event will combine presentations by Researchers specialize in water and remote sensing with a round table discussion with the users.
This event is not commercial.
