Remembering Operation Polo
Tue Sep 17, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan An Open Cultural Space
17th September this year marks 71 years since the erstwhile state of Hyderabad was annexed to India, in the year 1948, more than a year after India got its independence. While what transpired then has been largely forgotten and left out of our history books, a very important thing within that subject is the Telangana Armed Struggle (1946-51).

While the last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, was busy trying to do his best to stay independent and was negotiating with the Indian government, the communists in Telangana had given a call to arms against oppressive landlords in 1946 itself, two whole years before Operation Polo. The movement is one of the nest successful peasant revolutions that took place in independent India.

The state of Hyderabad, which comprised Telangana and parts of present day Maharashtra and Karnataka, was in flux, but what transpired between 1946 and 1951 in the region of Telangana was very different from the rest of the state. The Razakaars, a militia led by Qasim Razvi, which caused a lot of disturbances in the name of keeping Hyderabad independent, was met with resistance by the communists.

A very important aspect today, especially given that the issue of 'liberation day' (of Hyderabad from the Nizam) is being talked about, is that the anti-feudal struggle in Telangana was against oppressive landlords (working for the Nizam), who mostly perpetrated caste violence in the rural areas of the state. Chakali Ailamma, P. Sundarayya, Makhdoom Mohiuddin, Ravi Nayaran Reddy and many others fought for freedom to set poor peasants free from oppression.

Moreover, it is well-recorded in the Sunderlal Committee report about the atrocities perpetrated against Muslims (between 27000 to 40000 reportedly killed) in the aftermath of Operation polo (in the districts of Maharashtra and Karnataka mainly). However, in Telangana, so such thing took place, in spite of the communally charged atmosphere, thanks to the communist leadership which essentially controlled the rural areas of Telangana.

Today, very few people from that generation live; who can tells us what they witnessed during that period of flux in Telangana. Among them are Gabbete Raghu Pal (78), a member of the Communist party of India-Marxist and Kandimalla Prathap Reddy (85), a member of the Communist Party of India, who were just children when Operation Polo took place, but have several stories and eyewitness accounts that will help us understand both Operation Polo and the Telangana Armed Struggle.

So come join us for a talk and discussion with the speakers, who will help us understand our state's history in a more personal manner and also throw some light on what transpired during those days of strife.

About the speakers:

Mr. Raghu Pal's association with the Telangana Armed Struggle started as child, when he witnessed many incidents in his village in Jangaon Taluka (district today). His father, G. Gopal Reddy, was in fact a senior CPI leader, who was also arrested and jailed for his participation in the armed struggle (CPI was banned even after independence, the party called-off the rebellion in 1951). He has been with the CPM since his youth.

Kandimalla Pratap Reddy is a renowned author and public speaker on the Telangana peasant armed uprising. His association with the communist movement started when he was a teenager as a courier responsible for passing messages between the leaders and comrades underground and aiding them with food and transport. His well known books include “Veera Telangana Sayudha Samaram”, “Ralina Ratnalu”, “Gadar Viplavam”, “Bandook (novel)” etc to name a few. In “Ralina Ratnalu” he captures the stories of hundreds of commoners who lay their lives down for the cause of the peasant uprising from every district of Telangana.

ALL ARE INVITED.

Organizer:
The event is being hosted by Yunus Lasania, a city based journalist and Moses Tulasi, Documentary filmmaker who are currently interviewing eyewitnesses of Operation Polo and Telangana Armed Struggle.

Relevance of Periyar today : Contradictions of caste, language and religion

Thanthai Periyar lived in a time when the country was witnessing a turmoil in its social and political landscape. He stood against the current questioning the idea of nation, social constructs of caste, religion and the dominant culture. He was not an armchair revolutionary, nor a seasonal activist but a speaker who spoke his mind wherever he was. The talk will revolve around the contemporary relevance of Periyar at a time the nation is divided drastically on the lines of caste, religion and other identities and rise in inequality.

Thirumurugan Gandhi is an human rights activist and a geopolitical commentator. He spoke in the UN for the past three years advocating the rights of people facing war crimes against imperial regimes. Lakeer ke is Taraf (Documentary)
Sat Sep 21, 5:00 PM
Shilpa Ballal
The film is about the non violent, people's movement - Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) - which has been fighting for Adivasi people's right to proper rehabilitation for over 3 decades. It has been presented as a success story, where more than 250 thousand people, under the leadership of Medha Patkar, have fought and won the battle against oppressive government policies of rehabilitation.

The present model of development which endorses big dams, has always been challenged by the NBA, and the drawbacks of this model are now seen at every corner. The range of the damage is from adversely affecting the lives of 60,000 families to 80 kms of sea ingress, making hundreds of hectares of land infertile.

NBA's alternative models of development are also presented in the film, which has a long term positive impacts on society, be it the small scale power generation project or the life-schools (Jeevan Shala), which are being run by the Andolan over the last 25 years.

Adivasi culture of songs, Holi, their value systems, faiths are also shown in the film, which also points at the virtue of 'small is beautiful'.

The Narmada Bachao Movement is a success story of a fight over the last 35 years. The world should understand it as an ongoing struggle and that people's strength can change policies and can force the government to take steps towards justice. With the film, I also want to make an appeal to the rich, upper-class and urban middle class to be sensitive, considerate and humble towards those who had to made huge sacrifices for their everyday comforts. Media has been very partial about the NBA over the past decade now, calling it dead! With the film, I want to spread the message that the NBA is still very much alive and is giving hopes to lakhs of people even outside the valley.

Park
Sat Sep 21, 7:30 PM
Chitralekha Arts Theatre Group
A comedy play about three men in a park fighting for their place;
there are three benches but not enough. The play touches upon
that thing which is at a premium these days – space – literally
and metaphorically. What starts of as light-hearted banter
evolves into a serious conflict about space, territory and
ownership. These become the main issues.
Park can be many things; it can be a metaphor for home, or a
metaphor for love, or even your workplace. It deals with a
problem of space, which is universal.

Ek Durachari Raja
Sun Sep 22, 7:00 PM
Shudrka Hyderabad
The play, 'Rajar' has drawn from Camus' “Caligula” the concept of deification of emperors which was common to the pagan world, the Greek and Macedonian kings. Raja (the king) discovers on the death of his sister and lover, Apurupa, that people die and they are not happy. From this point on, obsessed by his search for the absolute, poisoned with contempt and horror, he tries to exercise, through murders and systematic perversion of all values. He rejects friendship, love, simple human solidarity, and the concepts of good and evil. He takes literally all those around him like Taruni, his poet-friend, and forces them to see things logically, and levels everything around him through the force of his rejection. But if his truth involves revolting against destiny, his mistake is to deny humanity. One cannot destroy everything without destroying one's self. This is why Raja depopulates the world around him and, faithful to his own logic, decides to strangle Kamini, his mistress, uttering his gospel of hate at everything around him. This play is the story of a superior suicide, as described by Camus. It is the most human of stories and the most tragic of errors. Faithless to humanity out of faith in himself, he accepts to die for having understood that no one can save himself by himself, and that one cannot be free while opposing humanity. The play remains universally relevant. It represents the face of contemporary despotism, not only in terms of the whimsical madness of rulers, but also in terms of how people react to such rule with a glimmer of hope for the future

Why I Resigned? by Kannan G
Thu Sep 26, 7:30 PM

"Why I Resigned?" A talk by Kannan Gopinath, Former IAS Officer

Injustice and curbing of freedom of expression are worth sacrificing the biggest of power positions

Kannan Gopinath stands by democracy and free speech. He was an IAS officer who resigned in protest to the Centre's clampdown in Kashmir abrogating Article 370 and 35A. He stated, "What triggered my decision is the attempt to mutilate fundamental rights, to silence people. And the situation is that nobody should protest, nobody should raise their voice, raising your voice is not acceptable. The amount of power to silence those who react is tremendous,”
In this juncture of history of the country, where speaking truth to power is seen as an attack on the State and its machineries Gopinathan will talk about his experience in the service and his way forward. The shrinking democratic spaces within the administrative bureaucracy and the public sphere with the legitimisation of the rule of law is another aspect democratic aspirants had to deal in the current political scenario.

By looking at women’s participation in major political movements, from the Telangana People’s Movement to the demands of justice from the contemporary Mallana Sagar Irrigation project, this film attempts to complicate the relationship between memory, history and cultural production.

NRC- RELEVANCE & EFFECTS
A Dialogue

NATIONAL REGISTER OF CITIZENS’s (NRC) final list for Assam was released recently. Around 17 lakhs individuals have been left out of the list including a retired army veteran. In some families the father’s name is in the list but his son’s isn’t. Many people have committed suicides as they weren’t part of this final list.A petition has been filed in the Supreme court as 2000 transgenders were left out.
Detention camps are also under construction in Assam for detaining all the ones that will be declared foreign intruders. So far, the whole process has been daunting for the marginalized sections to produce the documents proving them as the citizen of this country.Amid so many inadequacies in the NRC Assam, Amith Shah has announced his desire to implement NRC all over the country.

At this point we feel that it is important to understand the relevance and implications of NRC, therefore lets us get together to discuss it and understand on 29th September at 4pm in Lamakaan.

A Tale of Two Extremes: Islamist Reactions to Hindutva Nationalism - A Talk by Hari Prasad

The establishment of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent and the Islamic State coincided with the rise of a Hindutva government in India. Today, both ISIS and AQIS are competing throughout South Asia to win recruits, conduct terror attacks, and foment religious turmoil—and both have increasingly fixed their gaze on India. While it has been widely recognized these two Salafi-Jihadist movements are seeking to exploit Muslim-Hindu communal tensions in India for their own gain, less attention has been paid to their rhetoric about the Modi government and the social and political ascendancy of Hindutva or Hindu Nationalism. This dynamic demands greater attention.

This presentation followed by an encompassing discussion will take a look at how these extremist organizations have discussed Hindutva activity in India, and the narrative they form.

About the Speaker:

Hari Prasad is a Research Associate at Critica Research and Analysis where he focuses on the Middle East and South Asian politics and security. He has previously worked for renowned Washington DC-based think tanks like the Hudson Institute, the United States Institute of Peace, and obtained his MA International Relations from the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs.

His writings have been published in prominent academic journals and media outlets such as the GW International Affairs Review, The Diplomat, The Harvard Journal of Middle Eastern Politics and Policy, The Wire, and the Stimson Institute’s blog – South Asian Voices.

Prasad’s latest academic research publication “The Salafi-Jihadist Reaction to Hindu Nationalism” was recently featured in Volume 21 of The Hudson Institute’s prestigious scholarly journal “Current Trends in Islamist Ideology.”

He recently gave a more formal presentation on Countering Extremist workshop organized by Nanyang Technological University – S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies’ Centre of Excellence for National Security. At this two day workshop, his presentation - based off his latest research paper - helped policymakers, mid to senior-level officers/analysts, and academics tips in examining radicalization, countering violent extremism, and terrorism.

Thu Oct 10, 6:00 PM
Govt. of Telangana, Industries & Commerce Dept
Justine Rouger (FCBA) and Yvan Detraz (Bruit du Frigo) will present 45 minute talks each with slides.
Yvan Detraz is a French architect, Director of Bruit du Frigo.
Bruit du Frigo (Fridge noise) was founded in 1997. The collective is composed by a permanent group of artists, architects, urbanists, photographers and a flexible collaboration with various professionals and inhabitants, depending on the type of project. It is a hybrid between an urban planning practice, a creative collective and a popular education structure dedicated to the study and intervention at city and territory level through participatory, artistic and cultural initiatives.
Its aim is to study the quality of the environment in its broadest sense: not just its architecture, townscape, ecology or landscape, but its perception as a cultural experience. It also improves singular and particular procedures that have the capacity to bring about change. The result is intended to be the provision of an educational experience that is accessible to all, the offer of an effective mediation service and the encouragement of cultural and artistic innovation.
Topic of the intervention will be: “Creative city and desirable development”
 Can a transitional urbanism be imagined as an alternative to the a well-planned, meant to last urban design?
 An urbanism of prefiguration toward new possible
 An urbanism revealing the potential poetry and usage of premises
 A permissive urbanism based on light and reversible interventions to give a real place to collective appropriation initiatives
 A urbanism to fight against public space impoverishment and self-withdrawal by inventing stimulating, desirable common spaces

Movie Analysis -Udaan
Sat Oct 12, 3:00 PM
Asfiya Kulsum
Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.

Chuhal
Sat Oct 12, 7:30 PM
kissago Theatre
The story begins when Sudheer comes to ‘see’ Aarti for marriage and goes on to evaluate, through these two characters, the existentialist tussle between what one has to be vs what one wants to be, how one chooses to live vs how one wishes to live. Aarti has this unusual idea of role playing each other in order to momentarily be what they each wish to be. It turns out to be more than just ‘Chuhal’ (meaning playful tease) and starts getting serious. But, does it help them answer their questions? Does it raise more questions? Watch this play to see where it goes.

Two Hindi Plays
Sun Oct 13, 6:30 PM
Udaan Performing Arts, Hyderabad
Udaan Performing Arts, Hyderabad is staging two Hindi plays on the same day i.e. on 13th October ( Sunday ) 2019 at Lamakaan at 06:45 pm onwards.

1 Ek Akeli Aurat ( Synopsis ) - Locked in a flat, a solitary woman makes her confession. Amid domestic chores, dodgy phone calls, a sex-mad brother-in-law and a forever screaming baby she tells us the story of how her love for a young student led to her imprisonment at the hands of her jealous husband. Through farce to tragedy, her story propels the audience to its shocking climax.

2 Pichle Ikkis Saal ( Synopsis ) - “Insecurity, complex, pollution, money, cell phones, drugs, orkut, facebook, relationships, manners, ethics, love, parents, pressure, sex, freedom, capitalism, education , dependence, awareness, guilt, communication, happiness, confusion...Why do I do the things, which I do? I think rubbish. I feel rubbish... Who am I?
I am not a hardcore rightist, nor a leftist. Not even a orthodox brahmin nor a suppressed dalit. Not a gay nor a part of the minority, not a lefty, or mentally ill..Who the hell am I? Just a oversensitive guy.. confused.. trapped!?

Where do I go.. ? What do I do? Will drugs help? Or should turn a blind eye? That wont help, I have tried.. I have tried everything.. Everyone has tried everything..”

Straight out of the minds of 21 year olds. The story of a youngster who finally goes to a reality show which is there to create an extremist, terrorist young force..Is it fundamentalist? Religious? Regional? Certainly not!

Exactly what happened with the young parents, involved in liberal, leftist, socialist movements in and after the 1975 Emergency? What happened with the concept of a free, secular, liberal and ideal nation worth to give birth to a child? What happened with the values and ethics which they expected from their previous generation of freedom fighters?

What exactly did happen in the last 21 years...(Pichle Ikkis Saal)

He is also the founder of May 17 Movement and raised his voice against the Indian government's atrocities against Tamils.

A comedy play about three men in a park fighting for their place;
there are three benches but not enough.

Lamakaan

Off Road 1, Near GVK Mall, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad - 500 034

Join us for the premiere screening of Songs of Our Soil followed by a discussion with the filmmaker Aditi Maddali and writer - scholar Dr Gogu Shyamala.

Through Uyyala songs, an agricultural tradition rooted in the political expression of women in Telangana, Songs of Our Soil traces the histories of their resistance and memories of disillusionment. By looking at women’s participation in major political movements, from the Telangana People’s Movement to the demands of justice from the contemporary Mallana Sagar Irrigation project, this film attempts to complicate the relationship between memory, history and cultural production.

Aditi Maddali is a Mumbai-based researcher and multimedia producer. She is currently pursuing an MPhil in Women's Studies.

Aditi Maddali received a grant from India Foundation for the Arts, under the Arts Research programme made possible with support from Titan Company Limited.

Creative city&desirable developm

Write Club Hyderabad
Please help schedule this for Saturday: 12th October 2019
Write Club Hyderabad helps you pen your thoughts, spill your mind and finally make an appointment with the writer in your head. We conduct free, weekly events that foster writing. Our Meetups aim at helping writers reach their goals in a supportive, collaborative, social setting. Writing doesn't have to be all by oneself. We welcome anyone who writes, regardless of genre, language or age. We have members writing novels, short stories, poetry, screenplays, essays, school reports and more. What we do, basically: One of the members of Write Club (anyone with a participation count over 2 consecutive meetups) hosts a session. They bring forth a theme and writing exercises. We all then write to the host’s prompts and guidelines for about an hour. Once we're done writing, we read out our write-ups (optional). We also exchange feedback and constructively critique each other's works. Entry is free, anyone with an interest in writing can walk in. Bring your writing devices and we’re all set! We promise to provide you with good coffee and a super-creative conversation. We have Write Club sessions every alternate Saturday afternoon – 3 to 6 PM
