Cocoon - German Movie Night
Tue Mar 19, 7:00 PM
Goethe - Zentrum Hyderabad & Lamakaan
In the hot summer of Berlin-Kreuzberg, Nora, played by Lena Urzendowsky, hangs out with her older sister Jule (Lena Klenke) at places like the underground station, public pools, rooftops, and parties. She's like a butterfly in a cocoon, not quite a kid anymore but not fully grown yet – just like the ones she keeps in a box. Her journey takes a turn when she gets her period for the first time during gym class, she panics and runs to the girls' restroom. There, she meets Romy, who helps her clean her jeans and gives her a joint to ease her discomfort. Romy, played by Jella Haase also makes Nora realize something new about herself: she likes girls more than boys she says to her hardened sex education teacher with cautiously chosen words. The movie, directed by Leonie Krippendorff, tells a sweet, tenderly romantic coming-of-age and coming-out story with real-life scenes and simple language. In the end, Nora finds her wings and flies like a butterfly.

Her Name Was Sita
Thu Mar 21, 7:30 PM
Dhannya V Sasi , University of Edinburgh
Who is a good woman? A young Nepali woman asks this question to herself, school children, university students, sociologists, anthropologists, and medical doctors. Her exploration leads her to understand that in some situations, female suicide is believed to be a response to socially accepted oppression and abuse, which women are subjected to in their families and communities. She discovers that, in low and middle-income countries particularly, suicide is not always a mental health problem. It is a layered issue that can overlap between mental distress caused by stressful situations, conflict, grief, and mental health problems.
In Nepal, suicide is the single leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. It is a serious but neglected public health problem. Research shows that adolescents, youths, and females are the most vulnerable population to die by suicide.
Her Name Was Sita is dedicated to a 16-year-old girl who died trying to prove she was worthy of love.

*WARNING: This event will discuss suicide and self-harm that some people may find upsetting. It is not suitable for younger audiences

Join us for a screening of Her Name Was Sita, a short documentary exploring the concept of a virtuous woman and how shame and honor can lead to self-harm and suicide in South Asia. A panel discussion with public health researchers will follow the screening.

Bhang Journeys
Sat Mar 30, 6:00 PM
Speaking Tiger & Lamakaan
A reading and celebration of Akshaya Bahibala's new book, 'Bhang Journeys: Stories, Histories,
Trips and Travels'. The evening will include a reading by Ms Jennifer Larson, US Consul General, Hyderabad, followed by Q&A; and a book signing with the author, Akshaya Bahibala.

Published by Speaking Tiger, this is a fascinating, racy book on the most popular intoxicant of
India and the world. Packed with anecdotes, interviews, confessions, legends, facts, and data, this is unlike any book on the subject written in India.

About the book
For ten years, from 1998 to 2008, Akshaya Bahibala was in the grip of bhang, of ganja—drinking
it, smoking it, experiencing the highs and lows of an addict on Puri’s beaches with hippies,
backpackers and drop-outs from France and Japan, Italy and Norway. Then he drew back from
the edge and tried to make a life, working as a waiter, a salesman, a bookseller. He starts this
journal-cum-travel book with startling, fragmented memories of his lost decade. From these, he
moves to stories about people across Odisha whose lives revolve around ganja-bhang-opium.
There is the owner of a government-approved bhang shop who takes pride in selling the purest
bhang available and
insists it can make people as forgiving and non-violent as Jesus. The opium cutter who learned as
a boy how to massage a lump of opium with mustard oil and carve it into little tablets. The girl
who survived cholera by licking opium and became a lifelong addict. The goldsmith whose
opium de-addiction card entitles him to 20 grams a month, but who wishes it were 25. The ganja
farmer who came from Punjab in a helicopter. A young man, a victim of ganjaand-bhang-fuelled
paranoia, who believes Indian and American spies are out to get him. Excise department men
who go to destroy ganja plantations and are beaten up by angry villagers. Interspersed with these
stories are official data on opium produced, seized and destroyed; UN reports on the medicinal
properties of cannabis; and a veteran’s recipes for bhang laddoos and sharbat.
Full of surprises, utterly distinctive, this entertaining, often trippy book of memories, journeys,
facts and figures about the popular intoxicant is both a celebration and a warning.
About the Author

Akshaya Bahibala is a bookseller, poet, publisher and library activist. He is the co-founder of
Walking BookFairs, an independent bookstore and publishing house and one of the country’s
most popular bookmobile, has traveled more than 35,000 kilometers across 20 states to
spread the love of reading. Akshaya has written four books in Odia. This is his first book in
English. When he isn’t travelling across India, he lives in Bhubaneswar with his partner Satabdi
and friend Malu and their cats.

Sun Apr 7, 5:00 PM
Sagar Dhara, NS Prasad, Gangadhar Panday & Lamakaan
Despite environmental laws and regulations being in place for half a century, there is a perceptible decline in the quality of the environment in India and the world. Environmental problems, e.g., climate change, biodiversity loss, etc., have now become far too big for individual countries to tackle. People must now influence governmental policy and supplement governmental efforts. This can be best done by forming a rainbow coalition of people’s initiatives in environmental conservation and protection. A civil society platform, Parisarakkagi Navu (We for the Environment) of Karnataka’s environmental groups was formed in December 2023. The formation of similar platforms in Goa and Maharashtra are under active discussion.

We have the pleasure of inviting you for a meeting to discuss forming a platform of those--mass organizations, civil society organizations, environmental groups and individuals--working in Telangana to conserve and protect its environment.

Meeting date and time: Sunday, 7 April, 5.00 pm
Meeting location (address & location below): LaMakaan, Off Road 1, Near GVK Mall, Banjara Hills. Hyderabad 500034. Google Maps location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/N2PzoKWxNt2DtuyL7

Disc on transparency in Election
Fri Apr 12, 6:00 PM
In Defense of Reason
The introduction of EVMs in the elections in India has been a matter of controversy for many years now. In fact, the suspicion was first raised by BJP itself when its leader G.V.L. Narsimha Rao had written a book ‘Democracy at Risk, Can we trust our Electronic Machine?’. After coming to power, BJP has started defending the use of EVMs every time some opposition member or other people raise the question of reliability of EVMs. The results of last assembly elections, particularly in states like Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh have raised fresh doubts on the credibility of EVMs. Several petitions about 100 percent EVM votes- VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) verification are pending in the Supreme Court. Recently the apex court has issued notice to the Central Election Commission in this regard. The issue of EVM along with the recent revelations about the electoral bond scheme raise big question mark about the claims of free, fair and transparent elections in India. Many organisations have been demanding to ban EVMs and revert to the ballot system and also of reducing the role of money power in Indian elections. Now that the general elections are round the corner, it’s very important to raise the issue of basic political democratic rights of the voters in India. Because of this reason, we are organising a discussion on “Suspicion over EVM and the sources of electoral funding: the question of transparency in the elections”.
All are cordially invited to be part of this discussion.

Witness as he takes you through his stories, be it either the puzzling tale of a employee sneezing on his boss or a deranged old woman who storms a bank and drives the manager mad, or any of his other eccentric tales.

Screening of Kissa Kursi Ka
Tue Apr 9, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Kissa Kursee Ka is a 1977 film by director Amrit Nahata. The film is a political satire that lays bare the ugly reality of electoral politics. The film was banned and the prints were confiscated during the Emergency, in response to its commentary of Indira and Sanjay Gandhi.
Today this film is more relevant than ever, when we see the ruling fascist government brazenly resort to all tricks and tactics in an attempt to hold onto power, be it through EVM rigging or electoral bond scams. Join us at 7pm on Tuesday, 9 April, for a screening and discussion of this film at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills. Entry is free. In case of queries, contact 7013936466.

Francis Ford Coppola (born April 7, 1939) is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. He is considered one of the leading figures of the New Hollywood film movement of the 1960s and 1970s and is widely considered one of the greatest directors of all time. He receives five Academy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, two Palmes d'Or, and a British Academy Film Award (BAFTA).

Film Title: APOCALYPSE NOW | 1979 | 153 Mins | US | English Language with English Subtitles

About the film: Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American epic war film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola, John Milius, and Michael Herr, is loosely based on the 1899 novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, with the setting changed from late 19th-century Congo to the Vietnam War. The film follows a river journey from South Vietnam into Cambodia undertaken by Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), who is on a secret mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a renegade Special Forces officer who is accused of murder and presumed insane. The ensemble cast also features Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Albert Hall, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne, and Dennis Hopper. Harrison Ford, who was not yet a major star when filming, appears in a minor role.

Main Speaker: Padmaja Shaw (Activist and retired OU Professor)
