Vegetarians Only - by Sky Baaba
Sun Jan 3, 5:00 PM
Sky Baaba
Inviting all for an evening of book reading of Sky Baaba's "Vegetarians Only - Stories of Telugu Muslims" by Little Theatre's Shankar Melkote and friends followed by an interaction with the writer.
This book is a translation of twelve short stories titled 'Adhure: Muslim Kadhalu' by writer Sky Baaba transalted by various writers.

This book introduces readers to the life-world of Telugu Muslims, their dreams, sorrows and predicaments. Negotiations around the burqa and dowry are interwoven with communal sharing of marriage expenses and work. Unfulfilled love, the desperation and helplessness of penury are eased by promises of migration to the Gulf. The stories present moving portraits of individuals battling prejudice and isolation, within and outside the community, with dignity and courage.

They also foreground the friendships and camaraderie between poor rural and mofussil Telugu Muslims and Dalits and invite us to share their emotional journeys.

Skybaaba’s fiction captures a ‘Muslim subalternity’ in post-colonial Deccan that finds itself at the crossroads of language, religion and economies, challenging stereotypes, even as his use of Telugurdu’ brings into focus the disparate histories of Muslim communities across India. His stories raise vital questions about Muslim and Telugu
identity in India, the status of women in Islam, and crucially—caste among Telugu Muslims.

Written in refreshingly direct and simple prose, these stories will resonate with a pan-Indian readership and lovers of Indian literature.

Humorous StoryTelling byPanjatan
Tue Jan 5, 8:00 PM
Sutradhar
"Marhoom ki Yaad Mein – Irshad Panjatan ki Zabani" (a humorous storytelling), at Lamakaan, on Tuesday, 5th January, 2016, at 8 PM.

The man who was solely responsible for bringing mime to India during the 1960s, the veteran theatre & mime artiste Irshad Panjatan, has returned to his hometown Hyderabad.

Trained in Kathakali under Raghavan Nair and Narendra Sharma, Irshad Panjatan started his career as an actor with the Hindustani Theatre – the theatre group of Begum Qudsia Zaidi. In 1957, he enacted a scene without any dialogues in the play ‘Charudatta’, which ignited his curiosity for pantomine. He performed his first mime play in 1962, in Delhi, introducing mime theatre to India, which earned him wide acclaim. He also acted in a few Bollywood films during this period, including K.A. Abbas’ “Saat Hindustani” (1969).

Although trained in the ‘Marcel Marceau’ style of mime, he soon developed his individualistic style and language, and soon started touring with his solo mime act. He then left India to tour West Asian and European countries. After leaving India, he first performed at the Lahore Women’s College, and eventually settled down in Germany, and has continued performing as a solo artiste ever since. He has acted in German and Hollywood films such as ‘Manitou’s Shoe’ (2001), ‘God is No Soprano’ (2003), ‘Free Rainer’ (2007), and ‘Iron Sky’ (2012).
His last mime performance was in December 2008 in Pune, at the annual ‘Theatre Beyond Words’ Festival, where he performed his solo act ‘Walk of Life’.

Sutradhar brought him back to Hyderabad in July 2012, where he gave a lecture and a demonstration on mime, at Lamakaan; and Sutradhar has brought him back to perform his 55 minute solo piece ‘Patras Bookhari ki Yaad Mein. Tickets are Rs. 100/- each.

More information can be found at - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irshad_Panjatan, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patras_Bokhari.

Do not miss the once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from the veritable master of the art form!

Sutradhar also presents a mime workshop with Irshad Panjatan, at Sutradhar premises, on Sunday, 3rd January, 2016 from 10 am to 1 pm. Workshop fees are Rs. 2,000/- per person. To sign up, call/text +91-9848052541/+91-9704518555, or email team@sutradharactors.com.

Saiyyan Bhaye Kotwal
Sun Jan 10, 8:00 PM
Udaan Performing Arts, Hyderabad
Saiyyan Bhaye Kotwal ( A Slapstick Musical Comedy Drama )

About The Play - The famous Marathi folk play 'Vichha Majhi Puri Kara' was written by Vasant Sabnis, and was later translated in Hindi by Usha Banerjee as "Saiyyan Bhaye Kotwal".

The play has been designed for urban viewers while keeping the rural punches intact. The play follows the format of Maharashtrian Folk "Tamasha". The story is that of a king and his scheming prime minister. Following the death of the administrative head - the kotwal, the Prime Minister promptly fills the coveted post with his inept and undeserving brother-in-law. As per the hierarchy, the present Havaldar ought to have been promoted to that post. The wronged Havaldar along with his sweetheart Mainavati plans to frame the new Kotwal. Mainavati, who is a dancer, works her charms on the Kotwal and then beseeches him to fulfill her numerous wishes (hence the name, Vichha Majhi Puri Kara). She orders him to bring her the king's ring, chain and finally the king's four-poster bed (chhapri palang) - which he does. The play's slapstick comedy brings out the political undercurrents of nepotism.

Cinema goes to the people

Will discuss in length how with the help of new technology New Cinema is making new roads. Will illustrate my point with numerous example from documentary cinema and people's struggle.

In all above mentioned sessions I will use film clipping or sometime full film for the better understanding of the connection of cinema with its people. Thus I will show not less than 20 films during the 3 sessions.

'Cinema of Resistance' Story:
In September 2005 while expending its activity Uttar Pradesh unit of Jan Sanskriti Manch decided to experiment with film screenings. In its natural progression in the year 2006 for the very first time in the history of Gorakhpur we made an attempt to organize a festival of films from peoples’ contribution. We showed almost 20 films including short films, animation, documentaries and full length feature films. After screening of Anand Patwardhan’s film “War and Peace” we conducted a discussion session anchored by a panel of 4 people. More than 100 people participated in the discussion which lasted for 45 minutes. Around 4000 people enjoyed the screenings in the festival. At least 500 people from surrounding small towns participated in the festival. First year we dedicated our festival to the theme of Resistance in Cinema and clubbed it with 75th year of Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom. Jan Sanskriti Manch, Expression- Gorakhpur Film Society, Peoples’ Forum and PUHR (Peoples Union for Human Rights) were the main organizers of the festival. It was solely financed by individual contributions. We also released a festival brochure.

From next year i.e. in 2007 the idea of organizing independent film festival picked up and we succeeded in repeating it for the first time in Bhilai (May 5-6, 2007) and second time in Gorakhpur. After that it became a continuous journey.

Sanjay Joshi has done his Masters in Hindi Literature from Jawaharlal Lal Nehru University, New Delhi and studied Mass Communication for AJK MCRC, Jamia Millia, New Delhi.

Mr. Joshi has made several documentaries for government and non governmental organizations. The Paal System, Amrkant Ka Katha Sansar, Takae Ser Bhaji Takae Ser Khaja (टके सेर भाजी टके सेर खाजा), Yug Shrashta Vishnu Prabhakar, Comrade Zia-ul-Haq, Sawal Ki Jarurat are few documentaries directed by him. He also made a 5 episode serial “Paharpur Ke Bachche” based on the life of Gond children for Doordarshan and a video documentary on Hindi short story writer Amarkant for Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.

Mr Joshi has successfully conducted film appreciation course with students of Delhi University, Mohan Lal Sukhari University Udaipur, Lucknow University, Jamia Millia University and Bhartendu Natya Academy, Lucknow. He has also conducted various film making workshops with different media groups in India.

Sun Jan 17, 11:00 AM

Storytelling is an important part of human communication.

A good story can create emotions and feelings among an audience and can transmit complex messages and inspire people to take independent actions.

Being a filmmaker and screenplay writer Aparna studied storytelling intimately and have a simple formula of sorts that I share with Universities and Institutions. Aaj ki Kahani, Manto ki Zubaani
Tue Jan 19, 8:30 PM
Grim Pumpkin Production
Sadaat Hasan Manto needs no introduction. Manto is one of the best story tellers that literature was ever blessed with. The macabre and irony in Manto's narratives, are timeless. Through his narratives, Manto immortalized the degradation of humanity in the face of communal tension. He showed us how humanity faltered and failed in the name of the greater 'God'.
Our play is a series of three monologues, adapted from three of Manto's spine chilling short stories, namely, 'Khuda ki Kasam', 'Padhe Kalima' and 'Mozail'.This is not just another theater adaptation of Manto's literature. The world is moving towards another era of communal tension and the subsequent degradation of feelings, emotions, love, longing and everything that is beautiful, everything that is human. Our aim is to show where we are currently headed to, if we keep following the path of hatred that we are walking on right now. When 'Gods' become more important that humans, and history is witness to this, the outcome is not something desirable.
We have chosen stories that show the diversity of human psyche in the face of communal violence. Stories that not only warn us about the impending doom, but also gives us hope and direction.
On the 61st anniversary of Manto's death, we present to you an evening of Manto's mastery, 'Aaj ki Kahani, Manto ki Zubaani'.

Understanding Caste-Rohit's wake
Tue Jan 26, 3:00 PM
Anant Maringanti
The solidarity meeting for Rohit Vemula on January 23rd at Lamakaan was well attended. It was a diverse group with many different perspectives represented. The meeting lasted three hours. Many felt moved enough to want to speak and share the grief. At the end of the meeting it was clear that there were two distinct groups of voices. One that was convinced that casteism was the main enemy if not the only enemy, the other group of voices were unsure whether casteism was the main or even one of the enemies. It was clear too that this is an issue on which we need sustained engagement, debate and argument. It is important enough for many people to feel strongly about it. So for a start, we have convened another meeting on January 26th, the Republic Day the day 67 years ago, Independent India's constitution came into force having solemnly resolved to secure to all its citizens - Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.

It is open to all. We intend to take up a set of pertinent questions that were raised by participants on January 23rd about caste and how it shapes or does not shape our lives. The discussion will be led by Anant Maringanti, Director Hyderabad Urban Lab.

Aging as a Queer individual
Tue Jan 26, 4:00 PM
queer campus hyderabad (QCH)
This is a freewheeling discussion on aging and ageism with in the LGBT community. The idea is to start the conversation on aging in our own minds and in our shared spaces.

Reflecting on and perspectivizing aging as a queer individual.

What is it like to experience aging in a hypersexualised and youth obsessed queer community? Do we think about our aging selves at all? Are we afraid of age or can we gracefully embrace it? Compared to the familial network of care of a typical heterosexual elderly wo/man, how different will ours be? How we would like to prepare ourselves for our silver years?

Why do we seem to disappear from the "scene" as we age? Are we as a community ageist?

Saiyyan Bhaye Kotwal
Tue Jan 26, 7:30 PM

Date - 26th January 2016 Time - 07:30 pm to 09:30 pm.

Sakharam Binder - A Play
Fri Jan 29, 7:30 PM
Kissago Theatre and Film Production Group
Sakharam Binder tells the story of Sakharam’s women. They are the castoff wives - homeless and destitute - taken in by the protagonist as domestic servants and sex partners.

Laxmi is shy, submissive and pious while Champa, her successor is brash, voluptuous and spoiled.

Written by Vijay Tendulkar, this play vividly captures the strange and complex pathology of Sakharam, who on one hand, wants to please his women but on the other hand bullies them as well. He is, in one moment, a freethinking crusader for women’s rights and the very next sees him as a philistine- scornful of their devotion to him.

He strongly believes in exploiting the corrupt system for his own gain but realizes too late the price of playing the game.

To make them Universities again
Sun Jan 31, 3:00 PM
Anant Maringanti
This is the third in a series of meetings in the wake of Rohith Vemula. If in the first meeting we had an outpouring of anger and anguish, in the second one we shared a number of issues around caste privilege and discrimination in everyday life. In this third meeting which will be more structured as a workshop, we will work through the key issues and invite participants to commit towards an action programme. It will be led by Anant Maringanti.
If you are a teacher, parent, student, professional - if you see yourself as a stakeholder in the university as a public resource, if you believe that caste and other forms of discrimination need to be taken head on, do show up.
