Thu Dec 22, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team

Demonetization
Sun Dec 25, 1:00 PM
Parag Verma and Shishir Gupta
There’s hardly been another decision by any government in the post-independence era which has affected the whole country so tangibly and in such a direct manner as the decision taken by the Modi government on 8th Nov, 2016 to demonetize the 500 and 1000 Rupee currency notes. The rationale given behind this massive exercise affecting millions is to take out black money, keep a check on counterfeit currency and curbing financing for terrorist activities. When these claims started getting punctured, of late the government representatives have started emphasizing on yet another reason: to move towards a cashless economy. But how do we know what’s really going on! They said that it’s going to be a short-term pain for a long-term gain and people should sacrifice in the interest of the nation. We must ask whose gain and whose pain. If we think deeply we’ll find that there’s a catch – the nation! Whose nation? The nation they are talking about is not a homogeneous entity with everyone having equal access to the public services and all the basic necessities of life. In fact, demonetization has affected people in proportion to their position in the economic ladder; the lower the more severe has been the impact! There are people who weren’t affected at all, there is yet another card holding class who was affected a little but by and large has been cheerleading the decision, then there are people who have lost their jobs or even died! So, it’s not all roses as they want us to believe. There are people who will gain in long term and there will be losers. Is it going to be the majority of people dependent on daily wages for sustenance who will ultimately gain? Or will it be the top 10% who already own more than 80% of country’s wealth? Any inquisitive and rational person can’t help contemplating on such issues. We invite all such people to take part in a discussion being organized on this issue in Lamakaan on 25th Nov, 2016.

Discoveries at Fatehpur Sikri
Tue Dec 27, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Discovery of Ibadat khana and Christian chapel at Fatehpur Sikri

Ibadat khana( the hall of interreligious discussion) was the Place where Akbar held
discussions with scholars of various religions which culminated in the formation of a new
religion known as Din I Ilahi. Most of the scholars such as V.A.Smith Percy Brown and
H.G.Keen located it among the standing buildings of Fatehpur Sikri, especially the single
pillared room. Saeed Ahmed Mararavi followed by A.A. Rizvi and Vincent Flynn were the
only scholars who identified a buried mound with tall trees growing over it as the actual
place of Ibadat khana. But their arguments suffered due to the lack supportive evidence.
As part of a collaborative effort by Archaeological Survey of India and
Aligarh Muslim University Mr KK Muhammed excavated the mound for two years with
meticulous care and precision and compared the excavated structural remains with a
painting of Ibadat Khana (Akbarnama painting) painted during the life time of Akbar,
presently preserved in the Chester Beatty collection at Dublin. The fact that the details of the structure that was excavated remarkably tallied with the original painting of Ibadat
khana proved that the mound and structure excavated is the real Ibadat Khana.

The church constructed by Akbar at Fatehpur Sikri for the accommodation and worship of Christian Fathers were earlier identified by Father Heras among the standing monuments. But Mr Muhammed located and excavated another
mound on the basis of the description given by Fr Monserrate ( a Spanish Father who
occupied the Church along with Fr Rudolf Acquaviva, head of the mission to Akbar) in his
book Mongolicae Legationis Commentarius and argues that the chapel was not inside
Haramsera but outside Diwan I Am and closer to Akbar`s bed chamber.( Khwabgah) Since
Akbar built the Church in place of the existing perfume house (khushbu Khana)the careful
excavation of Mr Muhammed could expose distillation pan and perfume bottles.

Father Acquaviva was very close to Akbar and there was wide spread perception that Akbar is on the verge of conversion to Christianity. After the failure of the mission to convert Akbar, the Fathers left Fatehpur Sikri much against Akbers will. But the parting of Rudolf Acquaviva was really painful For Akbar. After reaching Goa the Fathers were killed at Concolim by a local mob who was infuriated by their activities. Akbar heard the news of the death of the Father Acqua viva with tears in his eyes and said “Alas Father Did I not tell you not to go away. But you would never listen to me”

The Power Point presentation takes you through the corridors of history when the structures of Ibadat khana and Christian Chapels were reduced to mud and rubbles, overgrown with a number of trees. One can watch the drama of how historical
structures slowly coming out out from the centuries of mud and ashes, after their initial
encounter with the archaeologist’s spade and knife.

The defining moment comes when the painting of Ibadakhana is compared with the excavated structure , in order to prove its veracity as Ibadat khana.

Excavation of Ibadat khana (Nursery of Indian secularism) and the Christian chapel mark an
important mile stone in the field of medieval archaeology and bring in to sharp focus the
potentiality of Mughal paintings as a powerful tool to understand the various Mughal
structures

Discourses
Thu Jan 5, 10:30 AM
Varnitha Kurli Reddy
Title- Discourses of masculinity, sexual violence, and "other" bodies
In Anti-capitalistic societies, it is common to understand geopolitical issues through personal narratives. The so-called "Will do as I wish" "none of your business" " private matters" "my pride" concepts that certain members( Religious Fundamentalist, Police, Enjoyers of Male privilege, Capitalists) advocated without much thought, in Neo-liberal India and in the regime of the current government is worth questioning. We live in a multicultural, multi-religious and ethnically diverse society where the personal and inter-personal is oftentimes political so if we continue to operate with this lasseiz-fair attitude, then the worst affected are the marginalized and voiceless such as Women, Children, Muslims, and Dalits, etc., Through Individual characters and stories, I wish to exhibit and make the viewer think about the politics and paradigms that each of these individuals are/were pawns to.
My characters turmoil is universal and the violence is not specific to a language or a country.
This is an ongoing project. Your reactions while looking at the pictures will be photographed as capturing the reaction of the working class, common Indian is what I am aiming for ultimately. Institutional problems are prohibiting me from taking this step. Hence, I am having this intermediary exhibit to understand what are the potential challenges.
Most of the images are visual memories of what I heard from people I met in places across India (Gujarat in the summer of 2013), read, and some of the people I know personally. I consider this exhibit as a social responsibility towards the victims and in general to voice my opinion of what it can mean to live in times of uncertainty and fear.

They have heard those stories so many times from Bardi (chief warden). Debanando, the caretaker, feels the presence of some supernatural being inside the house. The kids think it must be Ghuku. There is something mysterious about the landline in this ashram. Debanando, at times, keeps the telephone connection open. The provisions of the act are draconian on several counts; they negate the fundamental rights of citizens and go against the grain and spirit of the Constitution of India! The proposals include that:

-The Government can take action against caste groups, communities promoting ‘sectarian interests’

-All offences under the new law will be non-bailable.

-People can be arrested merely on suspicion of being a ‘threat to internal security.’

-No legal proceedings against security agencies can be initiated for action taken ‘in ‘good faith.’

-Both public and private establishments can be put under electronic surveillance

-The Government can create security zones with special policing powers.

In short, the proposed legislation literally suspends all civil rights and gives the police unbridled powers to arrest anyone ‘on suspicion’.

Night school on patriarchy and violence against women.

Bengalaru – another woman molested caught on CCTV camera, silenced by male mob! The latest in a black series of violence targeting women across the country. What’s wrong with this Pan-Indian abuse of Indian women?

Dr. Fatima Shahnaz, Professor, author, journalist and international human rights activist will talk on, and read excerpts from, her two upcoming books to be published called “The Bride Burning” and its sequel, “Girl, Reconstructed”. These two autobiographical narratives tell of her own experience as a battered wife and mother, and how she reconstructed a shattered life as a single parent after the trauma of violence. The books explore the dark side of the toxic legacy of warped cultural conventions and systemic abuse of women. The Bride Burning focuses on psychic and physical abuse; Girl, Reconstructed on the need for reform from obsolete patriarchal systems of male-dominance. Dr. Shahnaz, who grew up in the West but returned to her native Indian culture examines the relativist values and discrimination of women in both West and East.

First Talk (12th Jan): The root-causes of violence: family abuse and discrimination against the girl-child; cultural indoctrination and brainwashing; the fear psychosis instilled in women. Gender selection and female feticide. Societal judgmentalism.

Second Talk(18th Jan): Socio-political cynicism; police and political apparatus. Institutional male chauvinism : Blame-the-Victim attitudes; Sexual objectification of women; role of the media in projecting demeaning stereotypes of gender; pornography of violence.

Third Talk (19th Jan):Dangerous era of public inured to violence and gender discrimination. Corruption and delinquency in male youth. The psychic scars of trauma on victims and need for holistic healing and solutions; time for reform and attitudinal change. Support and rehabilitation of victims through state, community and family networks … and much more on the ugly truth about the conspiracy of silence!

Contesting Images of Futures of India : A Historical Overview ( 19th and 20th Century)
Divyaraj Amiya, M. Phil. University of Yuebingen, Germany

Concentrating more on the images of futures of India in the works of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1905), Mahatma Gandhi, Rahul Sankrityayana till Charu Mazumdar, Lohia and Vinoba Bhave attempt will be made to revisit the gaps between the projected futures of pre- and post-colonial India and the experienced reality of today. How can this hindsight help us in uncovering the underlying maps of teleological assumptions, units of analyses and areas of concern that were at the centre of their literery and political efforts ? Can this journey back to "ourselves" wil help us in narrowing the gaps between the projections of future today and the experienced reality of tomorrow ?

Thu Dec 22, 7:30 PM

Excavation of Ibadat khana (Nursery of Indian secularism) and the Christian chapel mark an
important mile stone in the field of medieval archaeology and bring in to sharp focus the
potentiality of Mughal paintings as a powerful tool to understand the various Mughal
structures

Discourses

Ghuku is a Bengali play about the inmates of an orphanage. Over the last few days, the inmates Tagor, Durba and Sharot see an old lady suspiciously moving around their ashram (orphanage) late in the evening. When they ask her, she says she is a GhunteyKurani – Ghuku – the dung collector. Is she the same Daini (witch) of the fairy tales of Thakurmar Jhuli? The kids wonder. They have heard those stories so many times from Bardi (chief warden). Debanando, the caretaker, feels the presence of some supernatural being inside the house. The kids think it must be Ghuku. There is something mysterious about the landline in this ashram. Debanando, at times, keeps the telephone connection open. He thinks that the stories of demons come alive and become more interesting if he keeps the connection open. Suparna comes in the night for an interview for the PA’s post. The same night Rajeswari from the Women and Child Welfare Department informs Bardi that an earlier inmate Parul has gone missing. The needle of suspicion of an illegal trafficking racket points to Bardi. Suparna suspiciously moves around the house and talks to Shakil Bhai on phone. Auto driver Rajkumar brings a distraught Parul in the middle of the night. Is she going to be safe here in the ashram? Or will all hell break loose on the inmates of the ashram?

Wed Jan 11, 7:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Renowned activist and journalist Teesta Setalvad examines the proposed Gujarat Protection of Internal Security Act.
