Feminist Street Theatre – Histories and Stories
A Presentation on Feminist Street Theatre during the 1970s & 80s in Delhi by Deepti Priya Mehrotra
Friday, January 20, 2017 | 05:30 PM

The late 1970s and 80s was a particularly fertile time for street plays, within the context of a vibrant women’s movement. Deeply political plays were created by ordinary women, from colleges, bastis and women’s groups, in Delhi, and performed hundreds of times. Actor-activist memories provide occasions to explore theatre as activism, as education and art. Revisiting vintage drama scripts feels meaningful, for the history they embody and the power they still exude.

Deepti is an independent scholar and a Fellow at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, researching towards a book on a spectrum of social movements in India of the ’70s and ’80s. Her publications include, Gulab Bai the Queen of Nautanki Theatre, Burning Bright: Irom Sharmila and the Struggle for Peace in Manipur and Home Truths: Stories of Single Mothers.

Sampurna Trust received a grant, with Deepti Priya Mehrotra as the Principal Investigator, under the Arts Research programme of India Foundation for the Arts, with part support from South Asia Women’s Fund.

BABA FARID MIR PROJECT

About the Mirs

The Mirs are a music community based in the Pugal region of Rajasthan. Hereditary singers
of the Sufiyana Kalam, the Mirs have been known for their passionate and intimate renderings
of the compositions of the Sufi mystics such as Baba Sheikh Farid, Sain Bulleh Shah, Hazrat
Shah Hussain, Hazrat Sultan Bahu, Ali Haider and Khwaja Ghulam Farid. They have been
musicians of the common people, serving as mediums of devotion and harbingers of peace,
hope and love through the ecstatic performances of the bhajans and vanis of Meera, Kabir,
Gorakhnath, Baba Ramdev and Achalram, which form part of the wider repertoire of the
Mirs. Their songs are mostly in Siraiki, a dialect of West Punjab which has strong affinity with Sindhi and Punjabi. In addition to their singing, the Mirs are deft players of the been (a
kind of bagpipe) and algoza (a double barrel wind instrument). Most of these compositions
stress on love as the basis of the relationship with God, nature and other living things.

The Sufi traditions of the Mirs have primarily been traditions of dissent and have flowered on the margins of mainstream life.

Performers:

Nazru Khan, Abdul Jabbar, Antar Khan, Manji Khan, Bassu Khan, Mode Khan and Sattar Khan.

About the Baba Farid Mir project:

The Baba Farid Mir project brings together the families of Mir musicians and their patrons scattered across the Bikaner region, in an attempt to reinvigorate their musical tradition. From October 2015 to December 2016, a core team of senior as well as young artists along with patrons undertook a yatra across the far flung Mir strongholds in the Bikaner region towards facilitating musical interchanges, community interactions and mapping of musical opportunities within cultural festivals and events.

This performance is part of the Baba Farid Mir project supported under the Arts Practice programme of India Foundation for the Arts, funded by Infosys Foundation.

Migratory Birds & Wetlands
Thu Feb 2, 4:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Wetlands provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits. They are important for primary products such as grasslands, timber and fish. Wetlands also help reduce the impacts from storm damage and flooding, maintain good water quality in rivers, recharge groundwater, store carbon, help stabilize climatic conditions and control pests.

Wetlands are home to many special plants, birds, fish and frogs. Wetlands provide essential habitat for rare or important species such as the endangered Spoonbill Sandpiper or the Baer’s Pochard. They are an important stopover for many migratory birds and many species rely on the regular flooding cycles of wetlands (such as those on inland floodplains) to reproduce. Some plants and animals live only in particular types of wetlands, for example, in mangroves, saltmarshes or hanging swamps.

We welcome you to join us on this important day for a talk by the Honorable Secretary of Birdwatchers Society of AP Mr. Shafaat Ulla.

Predictability of Politics & Growth In The US.

- A Talk by Dr. Abusaleh Shariff,Chief Scholar at the US-India Policy Institute, Washington D.C, USA & The Maulana Azad Professor & Maulana Azad University, Hyderabad.

Mr. Trump Triumphs; against all odds and against own expectation; a spectacular win indeed! With traces of racial undertones and hordes rural white-supremacists voting in vengeance to eight years of the so called ‘black rule’ of America. Mrs. Clinton is a victim of anti-incumbency -third straight Democratic rule in Washington D.C. The vote has been a close, although Mrs. Clinton has counted more of the poplar votes, the US electoral process has a unique arithmetic specific to each state which gave the coveted the winning total of 270 electoral votes to Mr. Trump. Over all Mr. Trump shifted the electorate to political right and towards the right side of American map. In real political terms this nation is split in the middle the Rural (dominantly Republican) versus the Urban (dominantly Democrat) divide. The urban concentration across the US are characteristically unique due to pluralistic, multi-ethnic and multicultural concentrations in city centers and working spaces.
There are racial undertones of white supremacy; will this fade away or consolidate during Mr. Trumps presidency is yet to be seen.

Defamation: Threat To Democracy
Fri Feb 10, 5:30 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
In India, defamation laws, especially the criminal defamation laws, have been more abused than used. It is a surprise that these laws, made more than 150 years ago, still exist in a free world. It is even more surprising that a nation burdened with serious issues in justice delivery even entertains such cases when the priority should be to the contrary.

Defamation laws are used to threaten, bully and silence free speech and promote censorship so as to enable the criminal activities of a few. Very few cases have been filed with an intent to pursue truth and come clean. Anyone, with even the most remote connections, can seek out any of the thousands of lower courts in the country to mount an enormous challenge against free media. This possibility is dangerous to our democracy.

UDAAN Performing Arts, Hyderabad Presents A Hindi Monologue

'Shakkar Ke Paanch Dane'

About The Play - Rajkumar has been requested to write a poem for a compilation to be published. If you knew Rajkumar you’d realize the absurdity of the request.
In an hour long monologue, Rajkumar tells us about his unremarkable life in his nondescript village and the five grains of sugar – the five people – who have stood out in this drab life for reasons stranger than fiction. The filmy mother; her poet brother Pundaleek; Raghu, the school hero; old man Radhey; and the anonymous ‘Truckwala dost’ . As Rajkumar talks, the five grains become a single life-game that he has been unknowingly playing for years…and Rajkumar realizes that everyone has a story inside them.

Taking democracy for a ride
Sat Feb 18, 2:00 PM
Lamakaan Programming Team
Recent strike by driver-cum-owners of Uber and Ola taxi hailing app companies throws up many questions. Who are the investors of these startup companies which don’t own even a single car? Why are the foreign private equity (PE) investors pumping millions of dollars in India in these two start-ups while they are yet to make profits? Why are these two taxi companies presently making losses? What is the game-plan of these apps?

It is Indians who hire the taxis and Indians’ money is paid for the ride; it is Indians who own and drive the taxis and bear the expenses related to repairs and maintenance; it is Indian cities that are bearing the pollution and traffic jams caused by the taxis of these companies; But these foreign-funded companies are becoming monopolies at the expense of Indian peoples' interests.

Both state and central governments are paving red carpet to them. Democratic values like sovereignty and equality are at stake. The speaker will explain how democracy is taken for a ride by these companies.

About the speaker:
P. Maharshi is a researcher in Economy and is an author. In the past he worked as a consultant in the USA and Europe.

BICENTENARY OF BICYCLE
Sun Jan 29, 10:30 AM
ECOLOGISE HYDERABAD
On June 12, 1817 the first bicycle was run in the town of Baden by its inventor, Karl Draise. Since then there have been millions of bicycle enthusiasts and in 2017 a very large number of events celebrating the occasion will occur all over the world.

From an ecological perspective the bicycle is one of the most sustainable and affordable mode of transport. Almost any one can afford it. It is cheaper than a smart phone! It is the transport of the future particularly when oil resources are depleting.

We at Ecologise Hysderabad will also like to celebrate the event. We open the year with a film show ‘The Bicycle-A Celebration of the Invention’. It will be followed by different people presenting the scene in Hyderabad and we hope that it will end up with forming a committee to celebrate the event in Hyderabad through out the year.

All bicycle enthusiasts are welcome!
