Riding on a Sunbeam: Journeys through Space, Time, Life and Love … is a special and exciting travel film that follows Mauktik Kulkarni (an Engineer turned Neuroscience student turned Zen traveler) and Sammy Jo (a Berkeley undergrad taking a gap semester) … in an unconventional touristy way.
Playfully, abundantly and on occasions, acutely, they explore the contradictions of our Indian society with interesting perspectives … exploring economically developed places alongside backward regions, staunchly nationalistic mind sets side by side with the insurgency prone pockets and the socially conservative elements that co-exist with countless liberal lifestyles … All within the same India.
Through smaller stories experienced throughout with the eyes of the two protagonists … Mauktik, who now turns to his own country and Sammy, who has never seen India before. The film creates a mosaic of India that is at once exhilarating, reflective, enchanting and laughable … in a way that has rarely been seen before.
Director: Brahmanand S Siingh is an award-winning filmmaker (producer-director) and writer based out of Mumbai. His latest film, Kaagaz Ki Kashti (Paperboat … 126 mins), a biopic on legendary ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, just ready for take-off, is already sailing on appreciative waves. His National-Award winning (among many other awards and accolades) feature-length documentary on RD Burman, Pancham Unmixed: Mujhe Chalte Jaana Hai, (113 mins) continues to enjoy an amazing, sweeping cult, critical and popular acclaim across viewing platforms.
Other recent feature documentaries like Riding on a Sunbeam: Journeys through Space, Time, Life & Love (108 mins), a fascinating travel documentary on the way non-touristy India presents itself to us; Through Our Eyes (85 mins), a group of batch-mates from a premiere Institute looking back at their elliptical journey of 25 years while continuing to dream ahead are also being extremely well-received. Even his earlier, somewhat shorter works like Ragpickers; Uncaging the Body (Apsara Award for Best Short Film, 2003-2004); A Burden of Love (on Alzheimer’s disease); Ashgari Bai (on an octogenarian legendary dhrupad singer) and a whole lot of other short, corporate and documentary films have drawn great response, highly recognized for its sensitivity, authenticity and engaging quality.
Siingh often brings out an insightful, exploring and reflective quality in the subjects that excite him, bringing out its core essence in a soulful and captivating manner. Many of his films have been screened at various International film festivals as well as on national and international television channels, and have been nominated for and won, national and international awards. He has also been invited to be on the Jury on International Film Festivals and is a consultant on selection of films in many film festivals and award platforms.
Currently, Singh is producing and directing another feature documentary, Quawwali: A Soulful Flight and developing a feature project, Jhalki … Ek Aur Bachpan (A Different Childhood) … the International buzz for which is already considered very high. He has also initiated a path-breaking venture — a series of well-researched, grippingly-told, tastefully-presented and thoroughly-distributed Biopics under Mobius Biopics Pvt Ltd.
Male protagonist: Mauktik Kulkarni, Executive Producer and co-anchor of Riding on a Sunbeam, is an engineer-turned-neuroscientist and is an entrepreneur at heart. He has been a part of two successful startups and is currently co-founder of a third startup named Wazzat Labs. He is an author, film maker, public speaker and traveler who has backpacked through more than 50 countries. His first book ‘A Ghost of Che,’ a memoir based on his solo, 8000km motorcycle trip in South America, was published in 2009 and he is working on his second book based on his one-year, round-the-world trip. He has delivered invited lectures on neuroscience, entrepreneurship, traveling, film-making and anything else that strikes his fancy. He has been a guest columnist for travel/sports and, over the past few years, gotten into film-making. ‘Riding on a Sunbeam,’ his first film project, is a backpacking film about India directed by National-award winner Brahmanand Singh. He is currently working on his second film project, which is a feature film adaptation of his book.
Female protagonist: Samantha Jo Fitzsimons is the female protagonist of the film, Samantha (Sammy) has backpacked through more than 10 countries even at a young age of 22 years. She has recently completed her degree in Premed and Anthropology at UC Berkeley. She also did a minor in music. Before joining this film, she has tried her hand at acting, modeling and has studied film-making as well.
SPEAKERS:
1) T. Vijayendra - Environmentalist & Ex-Trade Union Activist (Sustainability in Value chains & Importance of Hawker)
2) Sudharshan Rao - Trade Union Activist (Challenges & rights of Hawker)
CONTEXT:
Hawkers deserve support from other sections of people who benefit from their activities, as hawkers form an important section of the working class. They provide important consumer goods and services for ordinary people at affordable cost. Some times when they sell seasonal fruits, members of the upper classes also buy from them because they are fresh.
They form an important link in the chain of sustainable consumerism. Their prices are low because their over heads low. The hawker or his family does the procurement, processing or cooking themselves. They have low or zero inventories costs
Even though their prices are low, people still haggle for prices because the buyers are also poor. People don't haggle when they buy from big stores. Still in some cases, like hawkers selling tea or idlis from bicycle, the prices are fixed.
Traditional mass manufacturing methods resulted in the growth of retailing and hypermarkets. Such a value chain is mainly responsible for the excessive acquistion of consumer goods in the society. Theres a need to reconfigure these supply chains to achieve sustainability benefits. Hence, Hawkers and decentralized production chains are to be encouraged.
Hawkers face harassment as there are various channels of corruption through both govt. and non-govt. bodies, where hawkers end up paying space rent illegally.

Crafts and Bots is a combination of Craft work and Robotics. Here the students will be encouraged to think out of the box and develop gadgets and models using things around them like cardboard and thermocol in combination with EtchBricks. EtchBricks are Electronic building blocks which can be plugged in to each other to build amazing interesting projects without the need for programming, soldering or any prior knowledge in electronics.
Using EtchBricks anyone can build projects without the need of a computer. Instead children will be building a very small computer of their own which takes inputs and gives relevant outputs. This circuit in combination with Arts and Crafts help students build amazing models. With the simplicity of building projects, children as young as 7+ years can build, make and innovate amazing creations using EtchBricks.
The short term summer workshop will have the following impact on students
Students will be taught, how the basic gadgets around them work.
How they can make gadgets on their own using the material around them in combination with EtchBricks; using concepts of STEAM which is Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.
Students will be encouraged to think on their own, discuss and build projects, which will put their creative thinking, group activity and problem solving skills to use.
With just a short term workshop, students will gain confidence that they can build interesting projects using things around them.
This experience will help them think differently and make contribution to various national level science fairs along with students from various other schools.
Workshop Format: 1. Though we believe in Group Activity, we are very seriously concerned over individual learning. So there is NO group sharing of kits, each kid builds his/her own project. This allows each student gaining confidence to build and make along with bringing shy students to take a forward step who otherwise will be hidden in larger groups.
The students will be allowed to think practically and implement their own ideas. Once they get an understanding of the EtchBricks Kit, they will be confident and curious enough to build on their own.
A competition will be conducted at the end of the workshop based on a theme, the winner will be provided with an appreciation award and an interesting gift.
FEES: This is a free workshop meant to spark creativity in girls. As most of our events are dominated by boys. We want to make it clear that girls are equally good at it.
Conversations on Education is planned as a series of dialogical events to together explore the idea of education and its connection to our lives, aspirations, notions of work/employment and also engage with the implications of this with our own predicaments as learners, parents, teachers or even employers. We also hope to explore the possibilities available through more convivial educational opportunities/options available.
At this session we hope to examine some of the myths of the schooling system that we have all internalized. Can we, individually and collectively, look within and ponder over what is it that we have to root out of our belief system and explore what that change will translate into for myself (if I am a student), my child (if I am a parent) and for my students (if I am a teacher).
This event is the second of the series . Please register here for participation in the discussion

It is an art form where an artist creates an image using one material (we will use foam sheet) carving lines into that material base. This is called relief printing. Once the lines have been created, the artist then puts dye or paint over the material base using a special brush, carefully flips the material base over onto another material (usually paper) and presses down hardly on the base to make an impression. The artist lifts the base off the paper, leaving one print behind.
What is image theatre? Participants are given a theme and they , with their bodies create a shape, a statue and a response. These "images' that are formed can be expanded using sounds and also words, It is a practice in getting the mind off the way.

Negotiating a Colonial Legacy: Criminal Defamation and the Constitution
by
Gautam Bhatia
Gautam Bhatia is a practicing lawyer in Delhi, Visiting Faculty at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and author of the book Offend, Shock or Disturb: Free Speech under the Indian Constitution, 2016.
Date & Time: 17 June, 6pm
Venue: Lamakaan
The talk is being organized by Citizens for Inclusive Education (CIE) to understand the politics of defamation and its deployment against protest and dissent in the university. Several of you may remember that five students from English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, were convicted for six months in a defamation case brought against them by a faculty member. The Magistrate Court weaved together a problematic matrix of malicious and unruly students requiring discipline, of the University space as being sacred and neutral, and most importantly, that protest against discrimination is defamation.
The print media and some of the online media have celebrated the verdict, as a much-needed action against violent students from OBC, Dalit and Tribal backgrounds, who in the name of fighting for social justice are actually disrupting the “normal” university life. Against this verdict of the Magistrate's Court, the students have appealed to the Session's court which will shortly hear the matter.
We invite journalists, students, teachers, lawyers, activists and well-wishers to participate in the discussion and voice your concerns to save the right to freedom of expression, democratic values and human rights in higher educational institutions.
Entry Free. All are Welcome.

The Gate of Heavenly Peace is a three-hour documentary film about the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, which culminated in the violent government crackdown on June 4. The film uses archival footage and contemporary interviews with a wide range of Chinese citizens, including workers, students, intellectuals, and government officials, to revisit the events of “Beijing Spring.” From the beginning of the protests in mid-April to the night of June 3–4, the film provides a “meticulous day-by-day chronicle of the six-week period… This unglamorous but absorbing film interweaves videotaped scenes of the demonstrations and conversations with leaders and participants with an explanatory narration into an account that is as clear-headed as it is thorough and well-organized.”[1]
Among those interviewed are Liu Xiaobo, Wang Dan, Wuer Kaixi, Han Dongfang, Ding Zilin, Chai Ling, Dai Qing, Feng Congde, and Hou Dejian.
In addition, The Gate of Heavenly Peace examines the deeper history behind the demonstrations, providing historical and cultural context for the famous images that the Western media flashed around the world. The film explores the symbolic importance of Tiananmen Square and also looks at earlier political movements in China from the May Fourth Movement of 1919 to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76 to the Tiananmen Incident of 1976. In so doing, the film considers the ways in which the political habits and attitudes that came to inform public life in China over the past century also shaped the events of 1989.
Pauline Chen writes: “The Gate of Heavenly Peace illuminates how images of these movements, filtered and refracted through propaganda, emotion, and imperfect memory, provided inspiration and models for the participants, both students and government, in the 1989 events. The students thought they were emulating the May 4 leaders, forgetting that those students returned to school and worked for more gradual social change after successfully drawing attention to China's political and social problems. To some Communist Party members, however, the 1989 mass student demonstrations may have chillingly recalled the chaos and terror of the Cultural Revolution. Both the Cultural Revolution and the 1976 Tiananmen Incident attest to how extremists have used popular uprisings as excuses to get rid of their moderate rivals; the 'reactionary' Deng Xiaoping, who favored greater economic freedom, was blamed by Mao for the 1976 Tiananmen Incident and forced from his position. Unfortunately, today's hard-liners have also learned the lesson from these events. The moderate reformers Zhao Ziyang and Yan Mingfu, China's best hope for democratic reform, were ousted from power following the June 4 crisis.”
