The Gate of Heavenly Peace is a three-hour documentary film about the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, which culminated in the violent government crackdown on June 4. The film uses archival footage and contemporary interviews with a wide range of Chinese citizens, including workers, students, intellectuals, and government officials, to revisit the events of “Beijing Spring.” From the beginning of the protests in mid-April to the night of June 3–4, the film provides a “meticulous day-by-day chronicle of the six-week period… This unglamorous but absorbing film interweaves videotaped scenes of the demonstrations and conversations with leaders and participants with an explanatory narration into an account that is as clear-headed as it is thorough and well-organized.”[1]

Among those interviewed are Liu Xiaobo, Wang Dan, Wuer Kaixi, Han Dongfang, Ding Zilin, Chai Ling, Dai Qing, Feng Congde, and Hou Dejian.

In addition, The Gate of Heavenly Peace examines the deeper history behind the demonstrations, providing historical and cultural context for the famous images that the Western media flashed around the world. The film explores the symbolic importance of Tiananmen Square and also looks at earlier political movements in China from the May Fourth Movement of 1919 to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76 to the Tiananmen Incident of 1976. In so doing, the film considers the ways in which the political habits and attitudes that came to inform public life in China over the past century also shaped the events of 1989.

Pauline Chen writes: “The Gate of Heavenly Peace illuminates how images of these movements, filtered and refracted through propaganda, emotion, and imperfect memory, provided inspiration and models for the participants, both students and government, in the 1989 events. The students thought they were emulating the May 4 leaders, forgetting that those students returned to school and worked for more gradual social change after successfully drawing attention to China's political and social problems. To some Communist Party members, however, the 1989 mass student demonstrations may have chillingly recalled the chaos and terror of the Cultural Revolution. Both the Cultural Revolution and the 1976 Tiananmen Incident attest to how extremists have used popular uprisings as excuses to get rid of their moderate rivals; the 'reactionary' Deng Xiaoping, who favored greater economic freedom, was blamed by Mao for the 1976 Tiananmen Incident and forced from his position. Unfortunately, today's hard-liners have also learned the lesson from these events. The moderate reformers Zhao Ziyang and Yan Mingfu, China's best hope for democratic reform, were ousted from power following the June 4 crisis.”

Sushma and Sowmya Nittala sing the songs related to the theme with little intros and anecdotes. It is an attempt to bring music closer to even the casual listeners.

A talk by Usha Ramanathan on the Aadhar/UDAI.

Through this talk she examines,if this really a technology project? Or if is it about corporate interest and the capture of state power.

The talk encompasses the following aspects illegality, civil liberties, lawlessness, coercion, privacy; and also about how the technology rollout is happening, and the untested nature of the technology.

And some stories about how the UID project, and the UIDAI, can be understood.

About the speaker:

Usha Ramanathan works on the jurisprudence of law and poverty.

She has a PhD in law from Delhi University.

She has been investigating the UID project since November 2009, and has written extensively on it.

She was a member of the Expert Group on Privacy set up in the Planning Commission of India which gave in its report in October 2012. Member of a committee set up in the Department of Biotechnology (2013-14) to review the Draft Human DNA Profiling Bill 2012. Member of the Committee set up by the Prime Minister's Office (2013-14) to study the socio-economic status of tribal communities which gave its report to the government in 2014. She has been in a series of committees working to revise the vagrancy law.

This meet was much more engaging than the last one and lasted for two hours. @jean_jacob was the tale teller of the day and told an interesting story written by him with a book as the main protagonist. There were book swaps and challenges. Shwetali got the maximum of 15 days to read 'Insomnia' by Stephen King, while @Veni got the minimum of 3 days to finish 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coehlo.

have a diwan (anthology) of her work. A multi-faceted personality renowned
for her multi-lingual skills, mellifluous voice and dancing, she was also an
accomplished archer and horse woman. Known to be brave, she participated in
all the three wars fought by Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah the II. The Nizam
conferred upon her the title of Mah Laqa ,
meaning Visage of the
Moon along with the jagir or estate of Adikmet and other honours. Mah Laqa
Bai Chanda was a powerful woman in the court of the second and third Nizams
of Hyderabad as she was frequently consulted by the rulers on policy
matters. She was admitted into the omrah, the elite nobility and was the
only woman to have been awarded this status.

Mah Laqa Bai Chanda was a socially conscious and enlightened woman who
returned her debt to society by establishing a residential institution to
provide less privileged girls educational opportunities and impart cultural
training , a
concept unique for those times.

This is perhaps the first time that a theatrical performance on the
legendary woman is being performed and is intended to bring to life
Hyderabad’s
most famous woman and acknowledge her
immense
contribution to Hyderabad’s
rich legacy.

It is set in the 1930s and involves two peasant women who go into warfare.[1] The cast includes Zhu Xijuan, Wang Xinggang, Xiang Mei, Jin Naihua, Chen Qiang, and Niu Ben.

The Red Detachment of Women became famous after winning the PRC's best script, best director, and best actress awards in November 1961.[2] The film characters of Qiong Hua, Hong Changqing, and Nan Batian became quite well-known and following the success of the Red Detachment of Women ballet in 1964 by the end of 1966 was elevated to one of the eight "revolutionary model theatrical works" (geming yangbanxi, or yangbanxi for short), which formed the official canon.

In 1930s, Wu Qionghua was a housemaid of Nan-ba-tian, a cruel warlord of a village in Hainan Island, China. Often abused by her master, Qionghua was finally rescued by Hong Changqing, leader of the Red Detachment of Women - a troop of women soldiers. She joined the troop and became the Detachment leader after the death of Hong. They captivated and executed the warlord and liberated Qionghua's home village.

Jafar Panahi, one of the contemporary masters of World Cinema from Iran had been imposed with a 20 year ban from film making by the Iranian government in 2007. But Mr. Panahi still managed to make three films viz This Is Not A Film (2011), Closed Curtain (2013) and Taxi Tehran (2015).


And all these three films further explore the docu-fiction style where the lines between documentary and fiction blur so subtly and beautifully. Filmmakers world over, quite a few greats, especially the greats (Orson Welles for instance) have always tried this puzzling technique, trying to throw at the audience something so real that it gets supremely dramatic, otherwise called turning the camera around.Anyways coming to our film - A Love Letter to Cinema, is in a sense a rip off of Taxi Tehran. Panahi's Taxi is about how Panahi disguised himself as a cab driver in Tehran, mounted a camera on his dashboard and went around town for a day, a few of the passengers recognise him, many don't. Panahi's ban and other legal constraints in this scenario kind of push him to make this film in disguise and a camera pointed at life, shooting whatever walks into it.The exciting thing for us when we thought about it, is to put some sort of constraint upon ourselves for the film to look like a blur between what is real and what is staged. And the idea that whatever happens, the camera will never leave the car was the constraint we've imposed upon ourselves and we let the people/actors talk, say whatever, do whatever and the result is the best film we've made so far. The Gate of Heavenly Peace is a three-hour documentary film about the 1989 protests at Tiananmen Square, which culminated in the violent government crackdown on June 4. The film uses archival footage and contemporary interviews with a wide range of Chinese citizens, including workers, students, intellectuals, and government officials, to revisit the events of “Beijing Spring.” From the beginning of the protests in mid-April to the night of June 3–4, the film provides a “meticulous day-by-day chronicle of the six-week period… This unglamorous but absorbing film interweaves videotaped scenes of the demonstrations and conversations with leaders and participants with an explanatory narration into an account that is as clear-headed as it is thorough and well-organized.”[1]

Among those interviewed are Liu Xiaobo, Wang Dan, Wuer Kaixi, Han Dongfang, Ding Zilin, Chai Ling, Dai Qing, Feng Congde, and Hou Dejian.

In addition, The Gate of Heavenly Peace examines the deeper history behind the demonstrations, providing historical and cultural context for the famous images that the Western media flashed around the world. The film explores the symbolic importance of Tiananmen Square and also looks at earlier political movements in China from the May Fourth Movement of 1919 to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76 to the Tiananmen Incident of 1976. In so doing, the film considers the ways in which the political habits and attitudes that came to inform public life in China over the past century also shaped the events of 1989.

Pauline Chen writes: “The Gate of Heavenly Peace illuminates how images of these movements, filtered and refracted through propaganda, emotion, and imperfect memory, provided inspiration and models for the participants, both students and government, in the 1989 events. The students thought they were emulating the May 4 leaders, forgetting that those students returned to school and worked for more gradual social change after successfully drawing attention to China's political and social problems. To some Communist Party members, however, the 1989 mass student demonstrations may have chillingly recalled the chaos and terror of the Cultural Revolution. Both the Cultural Revolution and the 1976 Tiananmen Incident attest to how extremists have used popular uprisings as excuses to get rid of their moderate rivals; the 'reactionary' Deng Xiaoping, who favored greater economic freedom, was blamed by Mao for the 1976 Tiananmen Incident and forced from his position. Unfortunately, today's hard-liners have also learned the lesson from these events. The moderate reformers Zhao Ziyang and Yan Mingfu, China's best hope for democratic reform, were ousted from power following the June 4 crisis.”

A talk by Usha Ramanathan on the Aadhar/UDAI.

Through this talk she examines,if this really a technology project? Or if is it about corporate interest and the capture of state power.

The talk encompasses the following aspects illegality, civil liberties, lawlessness, coercion, privacy; and also about how the technology rollout is happening, and the untested nature of the technology.

And some stories about how the UID project, and the UIDAI, can be understood.

About the speaker:

Usha Ramanathan works on the jurisprudence of law and poverty.

She has a PhD in law from Delhi University.

She has been investigating the UID project since November 2009, and has written extensively on it.

She was a member of the Expert Group on Privacy set up in the Planning Commission of India which gave in its report in October 2012. Member of a committee set up in the Department of Biotechnology (2013-14) to review the Draft Human DNA Profiling Bill 2012. Member of the Committee set up by the Prime Minister's Office (2013-14) to study the socio-economic status of tribal communities which gave its report to the government in 2014. She has been in a series of committees working to revise the vagrancy law.

There were book swaps and challenges. Shwetali got the maximum of 15 days to read 'Insomnia' by Stephen King, while @Veni got the minimum of 3 days to finish 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coehlo.

have a diwan (anthology) of her work. A multi-faceted personality renowned
for her multi-lingual skills, mellifluous voice and dancing, she was also an
accomplished archer and horse woman. Known to be brave, she participated in
all the three wars fought by Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah the II. The Nizam
conferred upon her the title of Mah Laqa ,
meaning Visage of the
Moon along with the jagir or estate of Adikmet and other honours. Mah Laqa
Bai Chanda was a powerful woman in the court of the second and third Nizams
of Hyderabad as she was frequently consulted by the rulers on policy
matters. She was admitted into the omrah, the elite nobility and was the
only woman to have been awarded this status.

Mah Laqa Bai Chanda was a socially conscious and enlightened woman who
returned her debt to society by establishing a residential institution to
provide less privileged girls educational opportunities and impart cultural
training , a
concept unique for those times.

This is perhaps the first time that a theatrical performance on the
legendary woman is being performed and is intended to bring to life
Hyderabad’s
most famous woman and acknowledge her
immense
contribution to Hyderabad’s
rich legacy.

In 1930s, Wu Qionghua was a housemaid of Nan-ba-tian, a cruel warlord of a village in Hainan Island, China. Often abused by her master, Qionghua was finally rescued by Hong Changqing, leader of the Red Detachment of Women - a troop of women soldiers. She joined the troop and became the Detachment leader after the death of Hong. They captivated and executed the warlord and liberated Qionghua's home village.

Jafar Panahi, one of the contemporary masters of World Cinema from Iran had been imposed with a 20 year ban from film making by the Iranian government in 2007. But Mr. Panahi still managed to make three films viz This Is Not A Film (2011), Closed Curtain (2013) and Taxi Tehran (2015).


And all these three films further explore the docu-fiction style where the lines between documentary and fiction blur so subtly and beautifully. Filmmakers world over, quite a few greats, especially the greats (Orson Welles for instance) have always tried this puzzling technique, trying to throw at the audience something so real that it gets supremely dramatic, otherwise called turning the camera around.Anyways coming to our film - A Love Letter to Cinema, is in a sense a rip off of Taxi Tehran. Panahi's Taxi is about how Panahi disguised himself as a cab driver in Tehran, mounted a camera on his dashboard and went around town for a day, a few of the passengers recognise him, many don't. Panahi's ban and other legal constraints in this scenario kind of push him to make this film in disguise and a camera pointed at life, shooting whatever walks into it.The exciting thing for us when we thought about it, is to put some sort of constraint upon ourselves for the film to look like a blur between what is real and what is staged. And the idea that whatever happens, the camera will never leave the car was the constraint we've imposed upon ourselves and we let the people/actors talk, say whatever, do whatever and the result is the best film we've made so far.
