Creating a Created Future: The Fundamentals of Transformation
We often despair of creating the future we want to live in. It seems too distant, too tough, and just plain unattainable. We are submerged in so many problems that seem impossible to solve: war, corruption, an unpredictable world economy, mass unemployment, pervasive social malaise, disease, poverty, and the conundrum of our own lives and how to make a difference.
Yet, we desperately want a better present and a better future for our families, our communities, our world, and ourselves.
In this introductory lecture, Professor Michael Leslie outlines how to constitute oneself as the kind of entity who can powerfully call into existence the world we all desire, not by force or cunning, but by the transformation of who we are each being on the planet.
About Professor Michael Leslie
Dr. Michael Leslie has travelled the world in search of the keys to personal and social transformation for over fifty years, conducting research and teaching on five continents, in more than fifteen countries. His abiding scholarly and teaching interest is in the ontology and phenomenology of human transformation and planetary ascendance.
He received his degrees, chronologically, from the University of California at Berkeley; Columbia University in New York; and the University of Washington at Seattle. He is currently a tenured faculty member in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, where he teaches foundational courses in social responsibility and ethical leadership.
His inspirational book, “How to Get What You Really Want: Lessons from My Life!” is available in English, Mandarin, and Spanish on Amazon.com.

Countering online hate
Wed Jul 26, 5:00 PM
Neha Kanitkar
The online media is being increasingly used for hate campaigns to spread misinformation aimed to create distrust and alienation between different communities that result in hostilities and lead to violence. Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) with support from the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad has created the Countering Online Fanatic Indoctrination (COFI) Network with the aim to enlist persons from different fields well versed in religious and social issues with progressive ideologies as Partners. Through the COFI Network several Digital Literacy and Intervention Techniques Training Programs will be implemented to provide them technical skills and ability in handling a range of social media platforms. Equipped with the required technical skills in handling social media, these persons will then be able to effectively counter online hate propaganda (against different religious groups and communities) in social and mainstream media spaces both as individuals and also through organized groups.

Dr. Mazher Hussain, Founder of COVA, will lead a talk on the journey of designing and creating the COFI Network.

His artwork has featured in two books – one book on Bono Bibi of the Sunderbans and another on the life of Savitribai Phule published by Azim Premji University. Suman has conducted workshops on Bengal Pattachitra in Delhi with the Happy Hands Foundation, in Kolkata with Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, an organization under Ministry of Culture at a workshop organized at the Victoria Memorial Hall, and in Goa with the Kala Academy.

Bengal paintings, popularised by master artists such as Jamini Roy, are inspired by the bold themes, colours and icons of Kali+Durga. Appreciate and Learn the nuances of Bengal Folk Paintings - Nayagram, Kalighat, Bengal Pattachitra and Santhal Paintings.

Suman will engage the participants in an exploration of the Patachitra (Scroll Painting) performance tradition and enable them to create new performative pieces based on their world of imagination that they imbibe from their social and cultural environment. Girl Power Hip Hop and Freestyle
Tue Aug 1, 7:30 PM
Mira Manickam-Shirley
I am an environmental educator, surfer, parkour practitioner, and hip hop artist. My father is from Hyderabad and I was born and raised in the U.S. I will be sharing some of my hip hop music and videos, which celebrate the power of women and girls in surfing and the outdoors. I will be inviting the audience to join in, via a participatory beginners workshop in "freestyling" the art of creating rhymes on the spot, usually to a beat. This workshop is meant for total beginners who find the idea of freestyling to be terrifying, and is ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS. We will do exercises to loosen ourselves up, release ourselves from judgment, and HAVE FUN!!!

The global image of U.S. hip hop tends to be of commercial gangster rap, however this is not the full picture. In the big cities in the U.S. local hip hop scenes thrive and musicians and artists (many of them women!) create work relevant to local issues and their community. I would like to share my own work as a San Francisco Bay Area hip hop artist as well as invite the audience to join in the participatory community based spontaneous aspect of hip hop through a freestyle workshop

GST: The Road Ahead
Fri Aug 4, 4:00 PM
Hyderabad Urban Lab
In this talk hosted by Hyderabad Urban Lab, Dr. Amir Ullah Khan, will trace the history of GST and the road ahead. With the rollout of the GST, it is hoped that taxes would be simplified and harmonised. Tax terrorism would get extinguished. It may come at the cost of making India less of a federal state, but the tradeoff could be well worth it. However the beginnings have been rough. Not only is the industry unprepared, it is obvious that the government also is way behind on its preparations. The Telangana CM was the first to have realized that GST will cause distress. He has argued that that several thousands of workers sustain on the beedi industry and as such, imposing excess taxes on the industry will adversely impact the beedi workers. With more than 1,400 commodities that will have to be fitted into the five slabs – zero, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent, the tax department has its hands full. It has still not decided what to do with sin products where we need to fix special cesses on demerit goods that are now capped at 15 per cent for aerated drinks and luxury cars, and at 135 per cent for pan masala, and 290 per cent or Rs 4,170 per 1,000 sticks for cigarettes. Most items therefore will be fit into the existing VAT scheme. However at the moment, each state differs so much that actual fitments will involve intense lobbying by states. Businesses will start their own lobbying. We may well return to the age old system of business lobbyists using all means possible to get their produce into the lower slabs. The government is staring into a possible embarrassment. Dr. Amir Ulla Khan, the speaker is a development economist who is currently a professor at the Maulana Azad Urdu Unviersity and is no stranger to Hyderabad. He was member of the Telangana commission of inquiry into the socio economic conditions of Minorities. He is on the board of several key institutions of policy research, policymaking and development interventions.

Kamla by Vijay Tendulkar
Fri Aug 4, 7:30 PM
Kissago Theatre and Film Production Group
Kamla by Vijay Tendulkar is a naturalistic play. It focuses on the changed role of women in society. It was inspired by a real-life incident - the Indian Express exposure by Ashwin Sarin, who actually bought a girl from a rural flesh market and presented her at a press conference. But using this incident as a launching pad, Tendulkar raises certain cardinal questions regarding the value system of a modern success-oriented generation who are ready to sacrifice human value in the name of humanity itself. The playwright exposes the innate self-deception of this standpoint. It is the story of an unfortunate woman sold away in the flesh market and a so-called happy housewife married to a daring journalist, both having a revelation of finding themselves on the common platform of sexual slavery in this male-dominated world. PANCHLIGHT - A Romantic Comedy in Hindi

Written by Phanishwar Nath 'Renu'
Designed and Directed by - Sandeep Sahu

Date - 05th August 2017
Time - 7.30pm
Venue - Lamakaan

This fictional story, dating 50 years back, talks about a small village situated in the state of Bihar. The story describes the situation of that period when many small villages in India were still in darkness and had no access to electricity.

The play highlights the effect of modern technology on people who are still reeling under the traditional practices observed in a village. Highlighting this issue, the play exposes a romantic tale of the central characters in the story.

Although a romantic comedy, this play reflects on the conditions of our villages in India, 50 years ago. Despite numerous hurdles and challenges, people never lost faith in their fellow people and supported each other to fight those obstacles.

A talk on Crisis of Capitalism
Sat Aug 12, 4:30 PM
In Defense Of Reason

A talk on Crisis of Capitalism: It has been around a decade since the global economy plunged into crisis. The intensity of this crisis has deepened and its spread has expanded in this duration. It has impacted the lives and livelihood of billions of people around the world in an unprecedented manner. The job losses, growing social insecurity, widening income disparity in different parts of the world are direct outcome of this crisis. All the claims of an early recovery have got punctured. Make no mistake, this crisis is not just the usual dip in the business cycle, rather it’s systemic in nature. This crisis has yet again proved Karl Marx’s prognosis that capitalism is inherently crisis ridden system. In order to properly understand the nature of this crisis from Marxist perspective, the discussion forum ‘In Defense of Reason’ is organizing a talk series.     We invite one and all to this important discussion as part of the Marxist Study Circle.

Speaker: Anand Singh (political activist who writes in workers' newspaper 'Mazdoor Bigul' and Marxist theoretical journal "The Anvil")

Independence:For whom?For what?
Tue Aug 15, 4:30 PM
In Defense Of Reason
Amidst the euphoria of 70 years of independence, one must not forget to ask some pertinent questions: who is free today? Are we free from poverty, hunger and malnutrition? Are we free from caste-based atrocities and communal violence? Do we have freedom to choose our life partner? Do we have freedom to choose what we wish to eat? There could not have been a better day to discuss such issues than the Independence Day. Hence the discussion forum ‘In Defense of Reason’ is organizing a discussion on these issues on the coming Independence Day. All those who believe that these issues are important, are cordially invited to be part of this discussion.

4th Hasan Memorial Lecture
Tue Aug 15, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
YOUNG INDIA!!

DO WE NEED THE RADICAL YOUTH MOVEMENT FOR THESE NEW TIMES?

On Independence Day 2017, Lamakaan is proud to host a panel discussion with 3 emergent youth leaders for the 4th edition of The Hasan Memorial lecture.

The median age of the Indian population now stands at 27. Between 2004 and 2014, 150 million new voters were added to the Indian electorate. By 2019, it is projected that over 300 million voters below the age of 35 will be eligible to vote. Some commentators have suggested that the remarkable resurgence of fascism in 2014 was at least in some part produced by the consolidation of this new youth. As this trajectory gains even greater momentum what are the new questions that frame youth aspirations....

What are the ways in which the youth in India are expressing their concerns and frustrations?

How do we evaluate the state of the consolidation, post 2014-is it holding or is it falling apart?

What is a new language that a left youth movement can use to galvanize this young electorate?

What would produce a new organizing moment among this demographic?

How can the demographic dividend be encashed?

This year's Hasan Memorial Lecture, therefore brings together 3 emergent youth leaders, to articulate not just their vision but to engage each other's imaginary.

Our panellists for Hasan Memorial Lecture, will respond to these and other questions, on August 15.

“Lamakaan has always strived to ask questions and foster debate and dialogues on key issues in our society and there is no one better than our 3 young guests to engage with these questions”, says, Ashhar Farhan, one of the founders of Lamakaan.

The Panellists are:

Shehla Rashid Shora: Shehla, a former Vice-President of the JNU students' union (JNUSU) from 2015-16, was instrumental in leading the student agitation calling for the release of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others.

She is also vocal about the human rights situation in Kashmir, particularly for ensuring justice to minor undertrials & was a key figure in the Occupy UGC mobilization.

Jignesh Mevani: Jignesh, is a young lawyer and firebrand organizer who was at the helm of remarkable mobilization in response to a brutal attack on Dalit youth in una, Gujarat.

In a fierce four-month mobilization the Una Attached Land Samiti and Jignesh opened up a vision for a renewed and militant Dalit movement in India, which was the catalyst for the formation of all India Dalit Adhikar Manch.

Pratik Sinha: Pratik and his team at AltNews are leading the crusade against manufactured “news”, with the aim of eliminating “deliberate underground political propaganda".

He is also involved with Jan Sangharsh Manch, a civil liberties organisation. Since 2013 he has also been running the “Truth of Gujarat” page, a site focused on news about the Gujarat carnage.

About The Hasan Memorial Lecture:

The Hasan Memorial Lecture was instituted in 2014 and is held each year at Lamakaan on August 15 with an eye to emergent political and economic crisis in India/South Asia or the world. It is our single most important programming effort each year and draws a very significant audience. The previous editions of the lectures were delivered by Prof. Jayati Ghosh, Prof.Gail Omvedt, Bharat Patankar and Prof.Kodandaram.

Mr. Moyed Hasan in whose memory the annual lecture is named, was a scientist, a photographer, an environmentalist and a person with deep concern for the lives of ordinary people. His house, that he named Lamakaan (as in the Sufi literary tradition to mean 'an abode for those who travel without any worldly possessions') has now become an important part of Hyderabad’s cultural and political life. Mr. Hasan left behind an imaginary of what an engaged life is. From science to art, and environment to international affairs he encompassed a vision of how we must live our lives meaningfully.

The discussion would be for a duration of 2.5 hours and is slated to begin at 7pm.

Exposing Fake News
Wed Aug 16, 2:00 PM
Lamakaan
Lamakaan is thrilled to host Pratik Sinha on the day after the Independence Day (August 16th).
At a time when it is a given that our inboxes are flooded each day with multiple forwards spreading fake news, from the seemingly benign UNESCO awards and World Bank rankings to completely doctored videos aimed at inciting communal violence, Pratik Sinha and his team at AltNews are leading the crusade against manufactured “news”, with the aim of eliminating “deliberate underground political propaganda". Pratik, a former techie was compelled to start this venture since he believes, "It is extremely dangerous and no political party is working to stop it”.
AltNews describes itself as a website for the “post-truth world”; one that aims to “act as an antidote to the right-wing propagandists that have established themselves in the mainstream media”. In the five months since its launch Alt News has amassed over 43,000 followers on Facebook and 21,000 on Twitter. This, without either advertisements or external funding.
Sinha is also involved with Jan Sangharsh Manch, a civil liberties organisation. Since 2013 he has also been running the “Truth of Gujarat” page, a site focused on news about the Gujarat carnage.
Tracing the origins of a widely circulated hoax can often be complicated. An image or video may not have been manipulated: rather, an entirely authentic piece of footage may be circulated under false contexts. The techniques involved in deconstructing them involve, slowing it down, scraping the internet to find where it has previously been posted, analysing visible signage in the background, looking at streetscapes and trying to catch the language being spoken.
Lamakaan is proud to host Pratik for the following two workshops:
• Exposing fake news: Aimed at journalists to help separate the wheat from the chaff (2pm to 4pm) Link to register: https://goo.gl/forms/gze6MRgQihGrmj233

The storytelling and singing by Suman would help participants create new stories and turn them into performances, thereby instilling in participants the confidence to imagine the performative aspect of the Bengal painting’s tradition.

The workshop will be followed by a sale of Masterpieces by the Artisans.

Breaking Down Fake News
Wed Aug 16, 7:30 PM
