This month, the Cinephiles film club brings together two of Hitchcock’s most films alongside works by two filmmakers who pay tribute to Hitchcock’s continuing influence on cinema. This week belongs to Vertigo (1958), perhaps Hitchcock’s most celebrated and influential film alongside Psycho (1960). Chris Marker, the innovative French documentary filmmaker, watched it eighteen times when it first released! Jimmy Stewart plays a detective who is unable to prevent the death of a woman he is supposed to keep a watch over. He now wonders if he can bring her back to life in another woman.

The story of 4 girls unfolds when one want to cherish the every moment of life as she is on the verge of dying and on the other hand the another one decide to ends her life for the problem which can be however mitigated, yet, her perception towards life is of orthodox in nature, but the story take a twist when she confronts & realises that the girls who rescue her are from Red Light Area with one of the protagonist having positive approach towards life. The other 2 girls leads the life as comes by, yet are contended. They do not find any issue or problem with their respective life.

On the occasion of birth anniversary of Raj Bahadur Gour Deccan Studies and Lamakaan bring 'Yaad-e-Raj Bahadur.'

Dr. Raj Bahadur Gaur was born on July 21, 1918 at Goulipura, Hyderabad. He completed his primary education from Mufeedul Anam, Dharmawant and Rifa-e-aam schools. He completed MBBS in 1943. He was elected as Rajya Sabha member in 1952.

Dr. Raj Bahadur Gour was the president of Anjuman Taraqi Urdu Andhra Pradesh. He was the founder member of Urdu model school, Urdu Arts College and Oriental Urdu College founded by Anjuman Taraqi Urdu.

Just a week before his death (October 7, 2011) Raj Bahadur Gour donated generous contribution of 3 lakh rupees to Urdu Educational Trust.

His articles on Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Iqbal, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi, Prem Chand etc. have been published in various literary magazines.

He served Anjuman Taraqi Urdu and other institutions till his last breath.

This week we turn to Phoenix (2014), a very recent and brilliant reworking of Vertigo (1958), by the celebrated German filmmaker Christian Petzold. Set in Germany just after World War II, a woman is left for dead by her husband but survives. She decides to give him a chance to bring her back to life.

As India struggles under conditions of an emerging fascism new questions surface on the role of the Gandhians peace movement, How could a country that spearheaded the global peace movement just 50 years ago turn the fascism? How should the contemporary peace movement respond? Sandeep Pandey, one of the country's most important Gandhians of the moment will be at Lamakaan to talk about the subject and answer your questions.


Sandeep Pandey is one of Indias leading Peace Movement Activist, and has been at the forefront of many struggles in his native state of Uttar Pradesh and across India.
Most recently he led a peace march against all odds in Gujarat from Ahmedabad to the Indian border with Pakistan in Kuchh. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California , Berkeley in 1992. He has written extensively in Hindi and English on concepts as wide ranging as Gandhi and Ahimsa to the the Right to Education.

And yet, the key metaphors used in the description of bacteria and infection are drawn from warfare –‘resistant’ bacteria ‘invading’ our bodies, antibiotics as ‘magic bullets’ and so on. How does this mentality of the battle field- affect the very questions of medical research on infectious diseases? Are we imposing deep rooted social and political prejudices on the concepts of medicine and our understanding of bacteria?

Modern medicine in turn has also become the source of new terms for warfare. Terrorism is compared to an ‘infectious disease’, the ‘terrorist’ dubbed a ‘virus’ and the response involves carrying out ‘surgical strikes’ to create ‘sterile zones’. It is an approach to which ‘resistance’ and death can be the only logical outcome.

K-Circle is today India's oldest quiz club, formed in 1972, and is based in the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. The recent nightmarish stories of sedating, drugging, beating, raping of young children at Muzaffarpur Children's Shelter Home came as a shock to the nation.

The Perpetrators, who ran the shelter, sexually exploited, systematically abused the power and raped minors for several months.

The shelter home came under the spotlight following a social audit report by TISS which detected large-scale complaints from inmates of sexual exploitation. Medical examination of the inmates confirmed sexual exploitation in the case of 30 of the 44 girls. The police registered a case against 11 people including Brajesh Thakur and Madhu Kumari on May 31. All 44 girls have since been shifted to short-stay homes in Madhubani, Patna and Mokama.

These horrifying tales of rapes reflect where India is heading, to an unsafe place for girls/women and children.

The "Baatein Aman Ki " - Peace Conversations is a campaign comprising of 5 Mahila yatras across India . The yatras will start on September 22 from five different places and culminate on October 13 in Delhi

Routes are being finalised.

While the travel of all 5 yatras is being raised by the central team, we are looking for organisations, friends, groups, movements in each state to host the yatras.

The canvas is taking the ideas of a peaceful, non-violent, harmonious and just India. Yatras are led by women but not only on women issues but on issues confronting the country today.

We do not want to confine the organizers to any one group but to have as wide a spectrum as possible.

We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle. The first two sessions on 9th and 10th August 2018 will cover the general introduction of Marxist philosophy – Dialectical & Historical Materialism

A discussion with Srikumar, ex NIT professor on the perils we face due to rapidly degrading natural resources and what can be done. How can we lead a sustainable and fulfilling life.

The story of 4 girls unfolds when one want to cherish the every moment of life as she is on the verge of dying and on the other hand the another one decide to ends her life for the problem which can be however mitigated, yet, her perception towards life is of orthodox in nature, but the story take a twist when she confronts & realises that the girls who rescue her are from Red Light Area with one of the protagonist having positive approach towards life. The other 2 girls leads the life as comes by, yet are contended. They do not find any issue or problem with their respective life.

Dr. Raj Bahadur Gaur was born on July 21, 1918 at Goulipura, Hyderabad. He completed his primary education from Mufeedul Anam, Dharmawant and Rifa-e-aam schools. He completed MBBS in 1943. He was elected as Rajya Sabha member in 1952.

Dr. Raj Bahadur Gour was the president of Anjuman Taraqi Urdu Andhra Pradesh. He was the founder member of Urdu model school, Urdu Arts College and Oriental Urdu College founded by Anjuman Taraqi Urdu.

Just a week before his death (October 7, 2011) Raj Bahadur Gour donated generous contribution of 3 lakh rupees to Urdu Educational Trust.

His articles on Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Iqbal, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi, Prem Chand etc. have been published in various literary magazines.

He served Anjuman Taraqi Urdu and other institutions till his last breath.

This week we turn to Phoenix (2014), a very recent and brilliant reworking of Vertigo (1958), by the celebrated German filmmaker Christian Petzold. Set in Germany just after World War II, a woman is left for dead by her husband but survives. She decides to give him a chance to bring her back to life.

Sandeep Pandey is one of Indias leading Peace Movement Activist, and has been at the forefront of many struggles in his native state of Uttar Pradesh and across India.
Most recently he led a peace march against all odds in Gujarat from Ahmedabad to the Indian border with Pakistan in Kuchh. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California , Berkeley in 1992. He has written extensively in Hindi and English on concepts as wide ranging as Gandhi and Ahimsa to the the Right to Education.

How does this mentality of the battle field- affect the very questions of medical research on infectious diseases? Are we imposing deep rooted social and political prejudices on the concepts of medicine and our understanding of bacteria?

Modern medicine in turn has also become the source of new terms for warfare. The recent nightmarish stories of sedating, drugging, beating, raping of young children at Muzaffarpur Children's Shelter Home came as a shock to the nation.

The Perpetrators, who ran the shelter, sexually exploited, systematically abused the power and raped minors for several months.

The shelter home came under the spotlight following a social audit report by TISS which detected large-scale complaints from inmates of sexual exploitation. Medical examination of the inmates confirmed sexual exploitation in the case of 30 of the 44 girls. The police registered a case against 11 people including Brajesh Thakur and Madhu Kumari on May 31. All 44 girls have since been shifted to short-stay homes in Madhubani, Patna and Mokama.

These horrifying tales of rapes reflect where India is heading, to an unsafe place for girls/women and children.

We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle. The first two sessions on 9th and 10th August 2018 will cover the general introduction of Marxist philosophy – Dialectical & Historical Materialism

A discussion with Srikumar, ex NIT professor on the perils we face due to rapidly degrading natural resources and what can be done. How can we lead a sustainable and fulfilling life.

Sri Kumar will also talk about Sangatya, his beautiful farm in Karkala. The work he has been involved with since his early retirement has been in varied fields - textiles to nuclear energy. He will give us a glimpse into his experiences.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary year of the birth of Karl Marx, the father of scientific socialism and the science of the proletariat revolution, Hyderabad Cinephiles is organising a Movie screening of The movie 'The Young Karl Marx'. The screening will be followed by a discussion on the story line and art of this movie. This movie screening is an attempt to remember this great revolutionary thinker. After the film, we will also talk about 'Relevance of Marx in today's context '.

The famous director Raúl Peck's movie 'The Young Karl Marx' is about the two great thinkers of 19th century, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, whose genius in the quest of science to change the world and their compositions until the writing of 'Communist Manifesto' is interestingly captured in the movie. We also meet Marx's life partner Jenny, along with many such people of that time, Prudhon, Bakunin, Weitling, Bruno bauer, Ruge etc. The polemics of Marx and Engels with these thinkers is also brilliantly captured in the movie. The film presents a very important phase of Marx's life and keenly presents his life and thoughts.
