The on-going hate spree against Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, Rationalists and political dissenters that has engulfed the whole country into a bizarre state of madness has of late converted into the lynch phenomena. A visibly "random" mob reasons out on its own to punish a person based on "false/fake" information/narrative being peddled about the person or his/her identity which doesn't comprise of the similar belief, similar outlook and similar socio-political views to that of theirs.

We, the conscientious citizens of the country need to stand up to this mobocracy and extend our struggle to curb the menace of mob lynching and hate in the country.

This month, the Cinephiles film club brings together two of Hitchcock’s most films alongside works by two filmmakers who pay tribute to Hitchcock’s continuing influence on cinema. This week we turn to Phoenix (2014), a very recent and brilliant reworking of Vertigo (1958), by the celebrated German filmmaker Christian Petzold. Set in Germany just after World War II, a woman is left for dead by her husband but survives. She decides to give him a chance to bring her back to life.

Sandeep Pandey is one of Indias leading Peace Movement Activist, and has been at the forefront of many struggles in his native state of Uttar Pradesh and across India.
Most recently he led a peace march against all odds in Gujarat from Ahmedabad to the Indian border with Pakistan in Kuchh. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California , Berkeley in 1992. He has written extensively in Hindi and English on concepts as wide ranging as Gandhi and Ahimsa to the the Right to Education.

K-Circle is today India's oldest quiz club, formed in 1972, and is based in the twin cities of Hyderabad & Secunderabad. The recent nightmarish stories of sedating, drugging, beating, raping of young children at Muzaffarpur Children's Shelter Home came as a shock to the nation.

The Perpetrators, who ran the shelter, sexually exploited, systematically abused the power and raped minors for several months.

The shelter home came under the spotlight following a social audit report by TISS which detected large-scale complaints from inmates of sexual exploitation. Medical examination of the inmates confirmed sexual exploitation in the case of 30 of the 44 girls. The police registered a case against 11 people including Brajesh Thakur and Madhu Kumari on May 31. All 44 girls have since been shifted to short-stay homes in Madhubani, Patna and Mokama.

These horrifying tales of rapes reflect where India is heading, to an unsafe place for girls/women and children.

We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle. A New Round of Jumlebaazi?: Examining Hindutva's Media Strategy.

As India shapes up for a brutal electoral battle in 2019, there is little doubt that this upcoming
parliamentary election could well be the most important election in India’s short 70-year history as
an independent nation. An outright BJP victory will mean the firm consolidation and control over the
state by the forces of the Hindu right. In the 4 years since 2014, we have already experienced in
significant ways the impacts of a fascist takeover of State and media institutions. The unexpected
sweep of 2014 by the RSS/BJP was fashioned and crafted by a brilliant bringing together of tested RSS
strategy and a new array of tools, technologies and personnel from across the world.
The 2018 Hasan Memorial lecture is dedicated to the question of the right wing’s media strategy.
1. What are the key elements of contemporary Hindutva's media strategy?
2. What are the elements that have been borrowed from a broader rise of fascism across the world in the building of Hindutva’s media strategy?

Urban Folk Project is an initiative to build bodies of work that introduces folk arts to an urban audience. The project was started by Shilpa Mudbi Kothakota and Adithya Kothakota to bring to the fore lesser known folk forms by creating scope for research, documentation, archiving and ultimately experimenting with these knowledge systems. In order fuse more folk into our lives we stepped out into lesser known semi-urban and rural territories of Karnataka and met inspiring people and experienced practitioners across the state assuring us a lifetime of work that led us to creating UFP.

We started our journey with ‘Yellammanaata’ which is a ritualistic overnight play hosted mostly during Dussera by marginal communities around North Karnataka. It is the telling of the transformation of a princess named Renuka into the powerful Goddess Yellamma. Yellamma’s temples are across South India, even in Sri Lanka. Her following across Karnataka, and Maharashtra consists of the Jogathi (transgender women disciples), Jogamma, Jogappa and the devadasi communities. We followed these communities to document rare and dying forms related to ‘Yellammanaata’ like ‘Chowdki Pada’ and ‘Jogathi Nritya’. Along the journey we have met some spectacular artists and eye-opening concepts. Today’s performance is a collection of our experiences, the myth of Yellamma, the songs we learnt from our first folk mentors and some of the folk forms that the ‘Yellamma’ following harbours.

We believe the contemporary world has a lot to draw from cultures that are deeply rooted to the land and people. When we took a closer look at the ways in which language was used, rituals were constructed and songs were composed in folk performances, we observed how structures of social hierarchy present themselves. Once stripped of its artifice, roles ascribed by society become blurred. We see our work contributing to the encouragement of pluralistic thinking in learners. History textbooks speak of broad sweep ‘mainstream’ historical narratives. It is increasingly important, in contemporary times, to engage with history as multifaceted and culture as heterogeneous. Our attempt is to initiate perhaps a simpler way to ensure that people hear of forms that were born in a different environment.

UFP asks, how can we, as aware and educated public help establish a stronger connection with the ‘other’? Is the ‘other’ indeed different from ‘us’? Why and how?

What separates man from animal? Well, our big brains of course! Our ability to think complex thoughts is what has led to everything that is humanity - from art to engineering, from philosophy to science - thinking is the precursor to all human action.

However, this utterly important skill has never received quite the attention at school, unlike some of the other subject areas mentioned earlier. So, if you've ever felt that you'd like to learn how to improve your ability to think, this workshop is for you.

For the purpose of this workshop we will be focusing on learning how to become critical thinkers. Critical thinking is our ability to think clearly, logically, and in an unbiased manner about any issue at hand. It is also our ability to reflect on our own thinking. Our ability to think critically helps us in every imaginable sphere of life - work, society, and relationships (with others as well as ourselves).

The workshop will talk about: a) What is thinking and what types of thinking happen in our brains, b) What is critical thinking, c) How to become a critical thinker; all this in a fun filled activity based mode.

In addition, you along with other learners from the workshop will be coalesced into a WatsApp learning group for the next one month. Through this learning group, we would help you practice and develop the skills you learn in the workshop and further orient and motivate you towards critical thinking.

Note: This workshop is designed for individuals between the ages of 15 to 27 years. However, you are welcome to attend even if you do not fit this age group.

by Dr. Sanam Roohi

Sanam Roohi defended her thesis in Anthropology titled Giving Back: Diaspora Philanthropy and the Transnationalisation of Caste in Guntur (India) from the University of Amsterdam in December 2016. As an assistant professor, she has been teaching various undergrad and postgrad courses at the department of Political Science at St. Joseph’s (Autonomous), Bangalore since September 2016. Her research interests include socio-spatial mobility in India, transnationalisation of caste, diaspora led development. Outputs from her PhD include publication of a few book chapters and a couple of journal articles, apart from a co-produced film on diapsora philanthropy. Dr. Sanam Roohi is also part of the Feminist Peace Research Network where she works on the concept of everyday peace and is currently collaborating with fellow feminists on a couple of articles and a special issue. Prior to her PhD, she had worked on forced migration and social justice that resulted in a few local publications and a book titled ‘Social Justice in India’ co-edited by Dr. Roohi and Prof. Ranabir Samaddar.

Three of his films have been selected for archiving in the U.S. Library of Congress.

This month, the Cinephiles film club brings together two of Hitchcock’s most films alongside works by two filmmakers who pay tribute to Hitchcock’s continuing influence on cinema. This week we turn to Phoenix (2014), a very recent and brilliant reworking of Vertigo (1958), by the celebrated German filmmaker Christian Petzold. Set in Germany just after World War II, a woman is left for dead by her husband but survives. She decides to give him a chance to bring her back to life.

Sandeep Pandey is one of Indias leading Peace Movement Activist, and has been at the forefront of many struggles in his native state of Uttar Pradesh and across India.
Most recently he led a peace march against all odds in Gujarat from Ahmedabad to the Indian border with Pakistan in Kuchh. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California , Berkeley in 1992. He has written extensively in Hindi and English on concepts as wide ranging as Gandhi and Ahimsa to the the Right to Education.

The recent nightmarish stories of sedating, drugging, beating, raping of young children at Muzaffarpur Children's Shelter Home came as a shock to the nation.

The Perpetrators, who ran the shelter, sexually exploited, systematically abused the power and raped minors for several months.

The shelter home came under the spotlight following a social audit report by TISS which detected large-scale complaints from inmates of sexual exploitation. Medical examination of the inmates confirmed sexual exploitation in the case of 30 of the 44 girls. The police registered a case against 11 people including Brajesh Thakur and Madhu Kumari on May 31. All 44 girls have since been shifted to short-stay homes in Madhubani, Patna and Mokama.

These horrifying tales of rapes reflect where India is heading, to an unsafe place for girls/women and children.

We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. We are living in an age of the terminal crisis of capitalism. The morbid symptoms of this crisis are discernible in different parts of the world in the form of the rise of fascist and semi-fascist forces. The toiling masses all over the world are the worst victim of this crisis. The increasing severity of poverty, hunger, malnutrition in the third world countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America and the growing economic disparity and unemployment all over the world bear ample testimony to this tragic reality. For all its lofty promises and technological advancements, Capitalism has brought humanity to such an abyss that the very survival of life on this planet is now at stake. Any sensitive individual cannot but be disturbed by such a tragic state of affairs. But the question which confronts all of us is what is to be done?

We believe that only logical solution to the umpteen socio-economic and ecological problems is the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist system and its replacement by a socialist system which would be based upon fulfilling the needs of people and not upon the mindless greed for a few. Make no mistake, we don’t use the word revolution merely as an emotional outburst. We are mindful of the fact that there cannot be a revolution without a scientific theory of revolution. And there is a name to that science of revolution — Marxism! Despite all attempts to bury it deep down in the earth, the specter of Marxism continues to haunt the rulers all over the world and more so in the current age of crisis. It is with the aim of understanding this science of revolution that ‘In Defense of Reason’, a discussion forum, is organizing a Marxist study circle. A New Round of Jumlebaazi?: Examining Hindutva's Media Strategy.

As India shapes up for a brutal electoral battle in 2019, there is little doubt that this upcoming
parliamentary election could well be the most important election in India’s short 70-year history as
an independent nation. An outright BJP victory will mean the firm consolidation and control over the
state by the forces of the Hindu right. In the 4 years since 2014, we have already experienced in
significant ways the impacts of a fascist takeover of State and media institutions. The unexpected
sweep of 2014 by the RSS/BJP was fashioned and crafted by a brilliant bringing together of tested RSS
strategy and a new array of tools, technologies and personnel from across the world.
The 2018 Hasan Memorial lecture is dedicated to the question of the right wing’s media strategy.
1. What are the key elements of contemporary Hindutva's media strategy?
2. What are the elements that have been borrowed from a broader rise of fascism across the world in the building of Hindutva’s media strategy?
3. Did the right’s media strategy successfully outflank the progressive’s narrative and how should we assess the shift in the mood since 2017?

Urban Folk Project is an initiative to build bodies of work that introduces folk arts to an urban audience. The project was started by Shilpa Mudbi Kothakota and Adithya Kothakota to bring to the fore lesser known folk forms by creating scope for research, documentation, archiving and ultimately experimenting with these knowledge systems. In order fuse more folk into our lives we stepped out into lesser known semi-urban and rural territories of Karnataka and met inspiring people and experienced practitioners across the state assuring us a lifetime of work that led us to creating UFP.

We started our journey with ‘Yellammanaata’ which is a ritualistic overnight play hosted mostly during Dussera by marginal communities around North Karnataka. It is the telling of the transformation of a princess named Renuka into the powerful Goddess Yellamma. Yellamma’s temples are across South India, even in Sri Lanka. Her following across Karnataka, and Maharashtra consists of the Jogathi (transgender women disciples), Jogamma, Jogappa and the devadasi communities. We followed these communities to document rare and dying forms related to ‘Yellammanaata’ like ‘Chowdki Pada’ and ‘Jogathi Nritya’. Along the journey we have met some spectacular artists and eye-opening concepts. Today’s performance is a collection of our experiences, the myth of Yellamma, the songs we learnt from our first folk mentors and some of the folk forms that the ‘Yellamma’ following harbours.

We believe the contemporary world has a lot to draw from cultures that are deeply rooted to the land and people. When we took a closer look at the ways in which language was used, rituals were constructed and songs were composed in folk performances, we observed how structures of social hierarchy present themselves. Once stripped of its artifice, roles ascribed by society become blurred. We see our work contributing to the encouragement of pluralistic thinking in learners. History textbooks speak of broad sweep ‘mainstream’ historical narratives. It is increasingly important, in contemporary times, to engage with history as multifaceted and culture as heterogeneous. Our attempt is to initiate perhaps a simpler way to ensure that people hear of forms that were born in a different environment.

UFP asks, how can we, as aware and educated public help establish a stronger connection with the ‘other’? Is the ‘other’ indeed different from ‘us’? Why and how?

What separates man from animal? Well, our big brains of course! Our ability to think complex thoughts is what has led to everything that is humanity - from art to engineering, from philosophy to science - thinking is the precursor to all human action.

However, this utterly important skill has never received quite the attention at school, unlike some of the other subject areas mentioned earlier. So, if you've ever felt that you'd like to learn how to improve your ability to think, this workshop is for you.

For the purpose of this workshop we will be focusing on learning how to become critical thinkers. Critical thinking is our ability to think clearly, logically, and in an unbiased manner about any issue at hand. It is also our ability to reflect on our own thinking. Our ability to think critically helps us in every imaginable sphere of life - work, society, and relationships (with others as well as ourselves).

The workshop will talk about: a) What is thinking and what types of thinking happen in our brains, b) What is critical thinking, c) How to become a critical thinker; all this in a fun filled activity based mode.

In addition, you along with other learners from the workshop will be coalesced into a WatsApp learning group for the next one month. Through this learning group, we would help you practice and develop the skills you learn in the workshop and further orient and motivate you towards critical thinking.

Note: This workshop is designed for individuals between the ages of 15 to 27 years. However, you are welcome to attend even if you do not fit this age group.

Giving Back: Diaspora Philanthropy and the Transnationalisation of Caste in Coastal AP (India)
by Dr. Sanam Roohi

Sanam Roohi defended her thesis in Anthropology titled Giving Back: Diaspora Philanthropy and the Transnationalisation of Caste in Guntur (India) from the University of Amsterdam in December 2016. As an assistant professor, she has been teaching various undergrad and postgrad courses at the department of Political Science at St. Joseph’s (Autonomous), Bangalore since September 2016. Her research interests include socio-spatial mobility in India, transnationalisation of caste, diaspora led development. Outputs from her PhD include publication of a few book chapters and a couple of journal articles, apart from a co-produced film on diapsora philanthropy. Dr. Sanam Roohi is also part of the Feminist Peace Research Network where she works on the concept of everyday peace and is currently collaborating with fellow feminists on a couple of articles and a special issue. Prior to her PhD, she had worked on forced migration and social justice that resulted in a few local publications and a book titled ‘Social Justice in India’ co-edited by Dr. Roohi and Prof. Ranabir Samaddar.

Dr Roohi is on a short visit to Hyderabad until 24th August.

Vijay is a Gurgaon-based writer, photographer and filmmaker. He completed his school and college from Hyderabad and studied filmmaking at New York University. He has produced five books and his projects have received over seventy honours in 24 countries. His films have been broadcast in over 200 countries on 75 channels including BBC, CNN and Discovery. Two of his books and three of his films have been selected for archiving in the U.S. Library of Congress. Parallel to paid work, he has produced over 30 films on pro bono basis, and has helped raise over Rs. 1.6 crores for various grassroots organisations.

Vijay Jodha as a filmmaker has won sixteen best director/film awards; grants from premier cinematic institutions like Sundance, Eurovision and ITVS International; as well as philanthropic institutions like Swiss Development Agency, The Ford Foundation and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Three of his films have been selected for archiving in the U.S. Library of Congress.
