ALL ARE WELCOME!
American musician, composer and director Paula Jeanine Bennett brings an evening of her folk opera for all folk, "A Village Of One" (AVOO) to Lamakaan. AVOO is a music and theater piece that has traveled to Indonesia, Morocco and recently Bhubaneswar, Odisha, at the Kalanirvana Art Center. It is work that addresses the loneliness of the modern soul backlit by village sensibilities and illuminated by catchy songs - and solar lighting! For this presentation, Paula will talk about her recent experiences adapting the piece in India and share her compositions.
The audience will be invited to raise their voices too
About Artist:
Paula Jeanine Bennett, born in Cleveland, Ohio, the heartland of the USA, is a vocalist, percussionist, composer, lyricist and cultural arts activist. Her long and luminous association with Indian music began in 2001 when she was invited to participate in the elite Jazz India Vocal Institute program in Mumbai. She has returned to India many times and participated in a variety of festivals and concerts, most notably at the NCPA, the Kala Ghoda Festival and the Capital Jazz Festival. Paula has adapted numerous ghazals and thumris and was presented by the American Center in a 5-city tour of Western India performing this material in collaboration with local ensembles. She has also composed new material reflecting her deep love for the pure voice exemplified in North Indian classical traditions as evinced on her release on India's Mystica Music, "Melody Sky" (with guitarist Lee Boice).
She lives on the Brooklyn waterfront and can see the Statue of Liberty from her rooftop.
Michael Yorke : As an anthropologist I had always relied on talking to the Indian Hijra community wherever I was doing research. They had some of the most analytical and critical minds among rural agricultural people. Not having access to land in a patriarchal society, and not being able to nurture a family, they were a community of people who relied on their wits, intellect and intelligence to make a living. Whenever I needed to know why a tradition was followed, they never jut said “because my grandfather did it”; they would search out the human motivations and historical reasons for habitual mode of conduct. They were a people always free from received ideas. They were an uninhibited group of free-thinkers. They were the most valuable informants an anthropologist could have.
While discussing this with a friend of mine in Delhi, who had once married into a grand Rajasthani regal family, she said that when living in an old fashioned zenana, she had relied on the Hijra guards of the zenana to adjust to her new life. So together we determined to make a film exploring the profound and ancient tradition that India maintains to accommodation people of transgender inclinations in a society where masculine and feminine role are so widely separated. Her contact with the ancient and traditional hijras of Ajmer gave us the most extraordinary access to this otherwise hidden and deeply private world, that finally took us into the world of modern hijra prostitutes in Hijra Gully in Mumbai.
This film is an anthropological insight and analysis into the ancient Indian tradition of transgenderism for a western audience where transgender issues have only recently become an issue of great social concern.
American jazz and fusion vocalist, percussionist and lyricist Paula Jeanine Bennett comes to Lamakaan with an evening of music from many streams. From her background in jazz to forays into North Indian semi-classical forms (ghazal, thumri) and new approaches for the pure voice, Paula will present original and adapted compositions from a variety of sources.
This will be Paula's last performance before returning to wintery New York City.
The evening will be fun, unusual and highly melodi

All the senses, including vision, can be regarded as extension of the sense of touch - as specialization of the skin. (Juhani Pallasma, The eyes of the skin)

We use the body as an electroacoustic instrument, bio-captors and sonification devices, trying to to explore the mediating roles played by pseudo-linguistic and non-linguistic sounds in the ways we signal varying internal and physiological states to the environment. The Election Commission of India has launched the National Electoral Rolls Purification and Authentication Programme in 2015 to streamline electoral rolls by detecting anomalies. This programme of linking Aadhaar with voter id has been piloted in the districts of Nizamabad and Hyderabad in 2014 and expanded to rest of the country. During the implementation of this programme 30 lakh voters have been deleted part of voter rolls. This has resulted in several voters unable to exercise their vote on the day of Telangana elections in 2018. The Election Commission and Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana have been very silent on these irregularities and have taken the voters of Telangana for a ride.
The session will discuss this entire process of what has transpired during NERP-AP and explain the important details of usage of technology and data in elections. Data has already effected the Telangana elections and the Election Commission of India is the cause of it.

Inviting all to an evening of "NTR and Cinema" with Mrs. Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi
Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao once said, "I can not say I did not see the Gods, having lived in the era of NTR. If his portrayal of Rama, Krishna is not a manifestation of the greater powers, what is?
ANR, a proclaimed atheist and a contemporary to NTR once said, hither to, I decline to play the roles of mythological heroes. Only one person, NTR, should do that. And If there are Gods really, they too must now start and try to look like him and appear as often!"
There are many many parts to NTR - a learned and deeply spiritual person, a very fine and powerful ideologue, an orator and above all, a man for the fellow human. Not only in life, even in cinema too NTR donned many roles. Both in front and behind the camera. Where he played the role of a writer, director, costumer, designer, manager and a daily worker. No work was below him.
Writer Mrs. Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi Garu interacts with us about the thespian and his works. Mrs. Lakshmi Parvathi is a well published writer of many literary works, fiction and biographies. Her latest book 'Vaidehi' is a fine example of anthologising a mythology to contemporaneity.

Khadi is hand spun, hand woven natural fiber cloth from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The cloth is woven from cotton and may also include silk, or wool, which are all spun into yarn on a spindle called “tekuva” or a kind of spinning wheel called “charkha”. Looking back at more than 250 years back before industrialization the fabric woven in our country is all khadi.
Khadi first caught the imagination of the nation and the world during freedom movement under Mahatma Gandhi who propagated it as not just a fabric, but a way of life. One that is centered around the village, where the practice of khadi would be able to generate livelihood and self –reliance. Khadi was meant to become a supplementary industry to agriculture, a crucial element in a self-sustainable economy
We all need to understand the villages are the soul of India. If we do not wake up now it will be too late later. Rural India has a pool of local power, skills, natural resources and local technologies. The most important thing is be able to look back to our heritage and analyse what is best we have inherited in terms of man power, skills, resources and technology to build links and fill gaps at the grass root level by helping more people earn their livelihood Project “ Reconstruction of Khadi” is an alternative for industrial mode of cotton yarn production aiming at low cost investment local technology involving people, training them in skills to revive cotton Khadi’s past glory by reinterpreting it todays context. Tridhara – Odissi Dance by Dr. Gajendra Panda and his disciples.
Tridhara is a pioneering institution which treasurers and upholds the unique style of Late Guru Debaprasad Das (founder father of Odissi dance and also Tridhara). The unique flavor of this gharana stems from the genius of Debaprasad Das, who amalgamated a variety of tribal and folk dance elements with the traditional Odissi.
Guru Gajendra’s composition style is refreshingly unique for a variety of reasons, but foremost among them is his masterful use of the “Sabda Swara Pata” which he absorbed, painstakingly and meticulously, from his Guru Debaprasad Das. At the feet of his master and surrogate father, Gaji babu also learned to present his dancers and himself in stunning sculpturesque friezes, which quickly take his audience to the resplendent temple statuary that Orissa is universally acclaimed for. In all that Gaji babu composes, there is to be seen a free flow of the three streams of Odisha’s dance art-tribal, folk and traditional village Odissi – and its brilliant embellishment in stylish execution of rhythm, movement and beautiful static pose.
