Imagining Palestine
Sat Jun 28, 3:00 PM
Manasa Tantravahi
Are you curious about the Palestinian condition, but too intimidated/ unaware about what's really going on? Are you someone who adores fiction and can really grasp an issue through reading stories and relying on your imagination? We've got something for you! The White Library, whose title is inspired by a fictitious story in a book called Invisible Libraries by Lawrence Liang, has been running book clubs both general and specific since 2019 with its host, Manasa Tantravahi. Last year, we ran an online experimental reading group that read Palestinian fiction exclusively (between July - December 2024). We're back with a new chapter of the club (with a fresh reading list!! and with a name name: 'Imagining Palestine'!) and taking it offline. What is 'Imagining Palestine' about? It's a limited discussion series slash book club that reads Palestinian fiction exclusively, now in its second run. As your host, Manasa will be talking about how to close read the novels/ short story collections that we select to read, what themes and elements to look out for, and supplementing our discussions with material surrounding each other. It's intended to be a guided, sensitive and a no-judgement space to learn about and discuss the situation, through reading novels exclusively. And don't worry about reading slow (or if you're just getting out of a slump!): the club will read no more than a book a month! *For THIS session, we're discussing: Palestine +100 by Basma Ghalayini. Feel free to join in! Contact The White Library at +91-9650628070 and/ or m.tantravahi@gmail.com for more details on the club! See you!

Every day, countless pet dogs—especially purebreds—are illegally bred, sold, and later abandoned when they fall ill, grow old, or are no longer considered “desirable.” These animals, bred for profit, often end up neglected, abandoned on streets, or dumped in shelters.

This June at Lamakaan, Humane World for Animals, in collaboration with Citizens for Animals, is organizing a Pet Dogs Adoption & Awareness Drive.
Let’s replace exploitation with empathy, and abandonment with adoption. 💛🐾

Remembering Ingmar Bergman
Wed Jul 2, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Every Wednesday this July, Lamakaan pays homage to one of cinema’s most profound auteurs with the film festival “Remembering Ingmar Bergman.” A visionary director whose work shaped the very language of modern cinema, Bergman's films remain timeless meditations on the human condition. With piercing psychological insight and stark poetic imagery, his stories explored themes of faith and doubt, love and loneliness, identity and death, often blurring the line between dreams and reality.

About the Director: Ingmar Bergman, one of cinema’s most revered auteurs, was born on July 14, 1918, in Uppsala, Sweden, and passed away on July 30, 2007, on the island of Fårö, where he filmed many of his later works.
Over a prolific career spanning six decades, Bergman directed more than 60 films and 170 theatrical productions, crafting deeply introspective narratives that explored existential angst, faith, mortality, and human relationships. His cinematic style is marked by stark imagery, psychological depth, and a profound use of silence and symbolism.

Film Title: SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT | 1955 | 108 Mins | Sweden | Swedish with English Subtitles

About the film: It is a witty and elegant romantic comedy set in turn-of-the-century Sweden. The story follows a tangled web of romantic entanglements among several upper-class characters and their servants. At the center is Fredrik Egerman, a middle-aged lawyer married to the much younger Anne, whose marriage remains unconsummated. Meanwhile, Fredrik’s brooding son Henrik harbors feelings for Anne, and Fredrik himself rekindles a connection with his former lover, the glamorous actress Desiree Armfeldt.
As tensions rise, Desiree orchestrates a weekend gathering at her mother’s country estate, where mismatched couples, jealous lovers, and secret desires collide under the spell of a midsummer night. With sharp dialogue and a touch of farce, the film explores themes of love, desire, and the folly of human relationships, all with Bergman’s signature psychological insight and visual grace

Kalamkari Workshop
Sun Jul 6, 11:00 AM
SADHNA CHAGANTI
Kalamkari art, a timeless artform from the region of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu and is renowned for its intricate beauty. Dating back almost 3000 years, this art was popularised by the Rayas of Vijayanagara, and reached its heyday during the Mughal period (1526-1857) in India.
The term ‘kalamkari’ has Persian roots where ‘kalam’ means pen, and ‘kari’ means craftsmanship. Therefore, ‘kalamkari’ translates to the intricate art work done through a pen made from natural ingredients. The pen or the ‘kalam’ is obtained from the bamboo and sharpened, it is traditionally dipped in kasimi (a natural black dye) black liquid. The ‘kalam’ is wrapped with wool around it, which holds the black dye and the artist squeezes the wool to extract this dye as and when required.

You’ll Experience:
An introduction to the history and significance of kalamkari art
A guided session on creating traditional motifs and characters
Hands-on instruction in sketching and outlining using kalam

The workshop offers an immersive cultural experience that connects you with India’s rich artistic heritage. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply curious to try something new, this is your chance to create something beautiful.

Film Title: THE SEVENTH SEAL | 1957 | 96 Mins | Sweden | Latin & Swedish with English Subtitles

About the film: Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957) is a haunting meditation on mortality, faith, and the silence of God in the face of human suffering. Set in plague-ravaged medieval Sweden, the film follows disillusioned knight Antonius Block (played by Max von Sydow), who, upon returning from the Crusades, encounters Death personified. In a desperate bid to delay his fate, he challenges Death to a game of chess—hoping to find meaning, truth, or even divine presence before his time runs out.
As the game unfolds, the knight and his squire journey through a landscape of despair, encountering flagellants, condemned witches, and a troupe of traveling actors. Bergman weaves together allegory and stark realism, using striking black-and-white cinematography to explore existential questions: Is there a God? What lies beyond death? And can one act of kindness redeem a life? The film’s iconic imagery—especially the final Danse Macabre—has become a cornerstone of world cinema, cementing The Seventh Seal as a timeless reflection on the human condition.

Lamakaan invites you to yet another scintillating film and interaction with the film director.

Dastarkhwan-e Rampur: A Feast in Rampur

A documentary film directed by Yousuf Saeed, 2023

Duration: 60 mins, Language: English/Urdu with English subtitles

A film tracing the cultural history of north India’s Rampur town through its food and culinary heritage. Among India’s wide variety of regional cuisines, the former princely state of Rampur in north India’s Uttar Pradesh is known for its rich traditional foods, mostly perfected under the patronage of its erstwhile nawabs or royalty. Through this documentary we not only get to taste the delicacies that are still prepared in Rampur but also look for recipes and ingredients that have been forgotten, or could be revived. The film talks to the local food historians like Tarana Husain Khan and the members of Rampur’s nawabi family, besides the traditional khansamas or chefs who prepare various delicious dishes for the camera. Some of the foods unique to Rampur are taar qorma, yakhni pulao, chapli kababs, gulatthi, and shah-pasand daal among others.

KOLAJ
Sun Jul 13, 8:00 PM
SHUDRKA HYDERABAD
To commemorate the centenary of the legendary playwright and theatre visionary Badal Sircar, Shudrka Hyderabad presents KOLAJ — a multilingual theatrical tribute curated with love, politics, and memory. Staged two days prior to Sircar’s 100th birthday, Kolaj is a woven tapestry of six of his seminal plays: Udyogparba, Pagla Ghoda, Michhil, Bhoma, Khat Mat Kring, and Spartacus.

True to Sircar’s spirit of questioning, resistance, and humanism, this production traverses languages, forms, and emotions. Interlacing the personal with the political, the past with the present, Kolaj reflects Sircar’s lifelong commitment to people’s theatre and his experimentations with space, structure, and storytelling.

This is not just a performance — it is an act of remembrance, of resistance, and of return. Shudrka Hyderabad invites you to witness this homage to a playwright who redefined Indian theatre and continues to provoke and inspire across generations.

Director: Burhan Qurbani
Year: 2014
Runtime: 123 minutes
Language: German (with English subtitles)
Genre: Drama / Historical / Political
Visual Style: Black & White and Colour
Themes: Xenophobia, identity, youth unrest, immigration, and political silence.

SYNOPSIS
Set against the turbulent backdrop of post-reunification Germany, Wir sind jung. Wir sind stark.
dramatizes the xenophobic riots that erupted in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in August 1992 - a dark and
defining moment in modern German history.
Told through three interwoven perspectives, the film explores the fault lines of a fractured society:
 Stefan - An East German teenager drawn into a violent nationalist crowd in search of identity
and belonging.
 Lien - A young Vietnamese asylum seeker striving for stability amidst escalating hatred.
 Martin - Stefan’s father, an SPD politician, torn between ambition and moral responsibility
as tensions rise in his community.
The film shifts from stark black-and-white to vivid colour as violence erupts, mirroring the descent
from simmering tension to open chaos. Director Burhan Qurbani, the son of Afghan immigrants,
delivers a searing exploration of youth unrest, political silence, and the dangerous consequences of
fear and disillusionment.
CRITICAL RECEPTION
Widely praised for its emotional depth and historical resonance, the film was Germany’s official
submission to the 88th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. It stands as an unflinching
portrait of a nation confronting the shadows of its own identity.

బెల్ హూక్స్ రచించిన ‘అందరికీ స్త్రీవాదం’ పుస్తకావిష్కరణ
తెలుగులోకి అనువాదం: ఏ. సునీత
Book Launch of 'Andariki Streevadam' by Bell Hooks. Translated into Telugu by A. Sunita.

What is feminism? Is it an ideology or a social movement? How should we understand it as a movement? How has it changed and improved the lives of women, men, and children? How have women from different races, castes, classes, and sexual orientations built this movement? What new ideas and changes has it led to regarding marriage, love, family, body, identity, sexuality, and sexual relationships? What social, political, and economic changes should we bring about to ensure these changes benefit everyone?

Eidgah & Kafan

Darpan Theatre
🎭 Darpan Theatre Presents

Ek Shaam Munshi Premchand Ke Naam
A Theatrical Tribute to the Legendary Writer on His Birth Anniversary
Adapted & Directed by Ali Ahmed

🗓 Date: 26th July
🕗 Time: 8:00 PM
📍 Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

Join us for a powerful evening of theatre as Darpan Theatre pays tribute to the literary giant Munshi Premchand, whose stories continue to resonate with readers and audiences across generations.

This special performance brings to life two of his most profound short stories—"Eidgah" and "Kafan"—presented on stage with emotion, depth, and honesty.

🔹 Eidgah
A tender and heartwarming story of Hamid, a poor orphan boy, who shows extraordinary love and maturity at a young age. While other children at the Eid fair enjoy sweets and toys, Hamid selflessly chooses to buy a pair of tongs for his grandmother to protect her hands from the fire. This tale speaks volumes about sacrifice, compassion, and the purity of a child’s heart.

🔹 Kafan
In stark contrast, Kafan is a dark and thought-provoking narrative about Ghisu and Madhav, a father-son duo paralyzed by poverty and hopelessness. When faced with death in the family, their response is shocking and unsettling. The story forces us to confront the brutal realities of social inequality, emotional detachment, and survival.

Through these contrasting tales—one of innocence and sacrifice, the other of despair and social critique—Ali Ahmed and the team at Darpan Theatre bring forth the timeless voice of Premchand with sensitivity and strength.

See you!

Remembering Ingmar Bergman
Wed Jul 16, 7:00 PM

Film Title: WILD STRAWBERRIES | 1957 | 91 Mins | Sweden | Swedish with English Subtitles

About the film: Wild Strawberries is a 1957 Swedish road drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The original Swedish title is Smultronstället, which literally means "the wild strawberry patch" but idiomatically signifies a hidden gem of a place, often with personal or sentimental value, and not widely known. The cast includes Victor Sjöström in his final screen performance as an old man recalling his past, as well as Bergman regulars Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, and Gunnar Björnstrand. Max von Sydow and Gunnel Lindblom also appear in small roles.

WIR SIND JUNG. WIR SIND STARK.
(We Are Young. We Are Strong.)

Director: Burhan Qurbani
Year: 2014
Runtime: 123 minutes
Language: German (with English subtitles)
Genre: Drama / Historical / Political
Visual Style: Black & White and Colour
Themes: Xenophobia, identity, youth unrest, immigration, and political silence.
Cast: Jonas Nay, Trang Le Hong, Devid Striesow, Joel Basman, Saskia Rosendahl, David Schütter.

All are Welcome!

Andariki Streevadam Book Launch
Fri Jul 25, 4:00 PM
Gita Ramaswamy, Hyderabad Book Trust

Sat Jul 26, 8:00 PM
