Eidgah & Kafan

Darpan Theatre
🎭 Darpan Theatre Presents

Ek Shaam Munshi Premchand Ke Naam
A Theatrical Tribute to the Legendary Writer on His Birth Anniversary
Adapted & Directed by Ali Ahmed

🗓 Date: 26th July
🕗 Time: 8:00 PM
📍 Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

Join us for a powerful evening of theatre as Darpan Theatre pays tribute to the literary giant Munshi Premchand, whose stories continue to resonate with readers and audiences across generations.

This special performance brings to life two of his most profound short stories—"Eidgah" and "Kafan"—presented on stage with emotion, depth, and honesty.

🔹 Eidgah
A tender and heartwarming story of Hamid, a poor orphan boy, who shows extraordinary love and maturity at a young age. While other children at the Eid fair enjoy sweets and toys, Hamid selflessly chooses to buy a pair of tongs for his grandmother to protect her hands from the fire. This tale speaks volumes about sacrifice, compassion, and the purity of a child’s heart.

🔹 Kafan
In stark contrast, Kafan is a dark and thought-provoking narrative about Ghisu and Madhav, a father-son duo paralyzed by poverty and hopelessness. When faced with death in the family, their response is shocking and unsettling. The story forces us to confront the brutal realities of social inequality, emotional detachment, and survival.

Through these contrasting tales—one of innocence and sacrifice, the other of despair and social critique—Ali Ahmed and the team at Darpan Theatre bring forth the timeless voice of Premchand with sensitivity and strength.

Film Screening: Court
Tue Jul 29, 7:00 PM
Hyderabad Cinephiles
Marathi Filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane’s directorial debut ‘Court’ is a biting critique of the judicial system in India where those speaking in favour of the oppressed and exploited are often found at the receiving end of the criminal justice system. The film revolves around the trial of a Dalit protest singer Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar) who is accused that one of his songs allegedly encouraged a Dalit manhole worker to commit suicide. As the trial proceeds, the arbitrariness of the entire state machinery and its anti-people character stands thoroughly exposed.
Recently, the Maharashtra Police was seen acting in a similar manner in real life when it lodged a case against Pushpa Sathidar, wife of late Vira Sathidar who played the lead role in the ‘Court’ movie, for reciting Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s famous poem ‘Hum Dekhenge’. In this context it would be quite relevant to revisit the movie and discuss its relevance.
The screening will be followed by a discussion on the craft and content of the movie. All are cordially welcome!
Subtitles will be provided.

Remembering Ingmar Bergman
Wed Jul 30, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
Every Wednesday this July, Lamakaan pays homage to one of cinema’s most profound auteurs with the film festival “Remembering Ingmar Bergman.” A visionary director whose work shaped the very language of modern cinema, Bergman's films remain timeless meditations on the human condition. With piercing psychological insight and stark poetic imagery, his stories explored themes of faith and doubt, love and loneliness, identity and death, often blurring the line between dreams and reality.

About the Director: Ingmar Bergman, one of cinema’s most revered auteurs, was born on July 14, 1918, in Uppsala, Sweden, and passed away on July 30, 2007, on the island of Fårö, where he filmed many of his later works. Over a prolific career spanning six decades, Bergman directed more than 60 films and 170 theatrical productions, crafting deeply introspective narratives that explored existential angst, faith, mortality, and human relationships. His cinematic style is marked by stark imagery, psychological depth, and a profound use of silence and symbolism.

Film Title: CRIES & WHISPERS | 1972 | 91 Mins | Sweden | Swedish with English Subtitles

About the film: Cries and Whispers (Swedish: Viskningar Och Rop, lit. 'Whispers And Cries') is a 1972 Swedish psychological drama film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring Harriet Andersson, Kari Sylwan, Ingrid Thulin, and Liv Ullmann. The film, set in a mansion at the end of the 19th century, is about three sisters and a servant who struggle with the terminal cancer of one of the sisters (Andersson). The servant (Sylwan) is close to her, while the other two sisters (Ullmann and Thulin) confront their emotional distance from each other.
Screening followed by Discussion. All are Welcome. Entry is Free & Open to all!

Imagining Palestine

Manasa Tantravahi
Are you curious about the Palestinian condition, but too intimidated/ unaware about what's really going on? Are you someone who adores fiction and can really grasp an issue through reading stories and relying on your imagination? We've got something for you! The White Library, whose title is inspired by a fictitious story in a book called Invisible Libraries by Lawrence Liang, has been running book clubs both general and specific since 2019 with its host, Manasa Tantravahi. Last year, we ran an online experimental reading group that read Palestinian fiction exclusively (between July - December 2024). We're back with a new chapter of the club (with a fresh reading list!! and with a name name: 'Imagining Palestine'!) and taking it offline. What is 'Imagining Palestine' about? It's a limited discussion series slash book club that reads Palestinian fiction exclusively, now in its second run. As your host, Manasa will be talking about how to close read the novels/ short story collections that we select to read, what themes and elements to look out for, and supplementing our discussions with material surrounding each other. It's intended to be a guided, sensitive and a no-judgement space to learn about and discuss the situation, through reading novels exclusively. And don't worry about reading slow (or if you're just getting out of a slump!): the club will read no more than a book a month! *For THIS session, we're discussing: Joe Sacco's Palestine and Footnotes in Gaza (the graphic novels!). Feel free to join in! Contact The White Library at +91-9650628070 and/ or m.tantravahi@gmail.com for more details on the club! See you!

Discussion on India's growth
Sun Aug 3, 5:00 PM
In Defense of Reason
India's growth Story: Islands of prosperity in the ocean of tears

Recently, the mainstream media reported that India has become the 4th largest economy of the world, surpassing Japan. There is no doubt that there has been rapid development in terms of roads, flyovers, ports, airports, luxury apartments and shopping malls in India in the last few decades, but the dark underbelly of this glittering development stands exposed when we see the situation on the front of poverty, hunger, malnutrition, education, healthcare, unemployment, housing, economic disparity, social and economic insecurities, climate change and ecological disasters. There is no doubt that the comforts of the life of a small section of Indians have improved considerably and some of them have amassed so much wealth that they have joined the ranks of the wealthiest people on planet, but the condition of workers, small and medium peasants and lower middle classes that constitute the overwhelming majority of our society remains pathetic. It is this paradox of India’s growth story that we wish to discuss as part of our next discussion. All are cordially invited.

Keeping Democracy Alive and Safeguarding our Constitution !

Speakers: Dr. P Vinay Kumar , Surgical Gastroenterologist & Chairman- Samvidhan Bachao Committee, INC- Telangana
Dr. Oudhesh Bawa, Historian and Columnist

A short film on the Late Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, highlighting his commitment to democracy and the Constitution of India, will also be screened.

Venue: Lamakaan, Banjara Hills
Date: Thursday, 7 August '25
Time: 7.30 - 9 pm

Democracy is kept alive when it is actively worked upon and not when it stagnates as a concept. Complacency gives space to fascist forces to infringe upon the rights of people slowly but steadily and systematically and eventually uproot democracy. The Constitution of India safeguards our rights and more of us need to be aware of our rights and duties enshrined in it. Taking inspiration from life of the late Zaheeruddin Ali Khan, who worked relentlessly to ensure the rights of people, Dr. Vinay Kumar and Dr. Oudhesh Bawa will share their thoughts on how we can practically safeguard the Constitution of India in our capacity as ordinary citizens thus keeping democracy alive in our country.
