Synopsis:
Kafkas Der Bau is a haunting adaptation of Franz Kafka’s unfinished story “Der Bau,” brought to the screen for the first time in its original language. Set in a sprawling, fortress-like apartment complex, the film follows Franz (Axel Prahl), a man who has seemingly secured everything he ever wanted, yet feels increasingly hunted by invisible forces outside his door. Surveillance cameras, locked gates, and elaborate defences cannot silence the echo of paranoia that grows within his mind.

As Franz isolates himself further, his relationships, career, and very sense of reality begin to unravel. The world outside, real or imagined, presses closer, and the burrow he built for safety becomes his suffocating cage.

Directed by Academy Award winner Jochen Alexander Freydank (Toyland), this chilling psychological drama explores themes of fear, surveillance, and the cost of self-imposed isolation in an age of constant watchfulness. Every Wednesday evening this September, we celebrate the enigmatic genius of Michelangelo Antonioni with a curated selection of his most iconic films. From the haunting silences of L’Avventura to the visual poetry of Blow-Up, Antonioni’s work reshaped cinematic language—favoring mood, ambiguity, and existential depth over conventional storytelling. His films invite us to linger in the spaces between words, where alienation, desire, and modernity collide.

Born on September 29, 1912, in Ferrara, Italy, and passing away on July 30, 2007, in Rome, Antonioni left behind a legacy that continues to challenge and inspire filmmakers worldwide. He was the only director to win the Palme d'Or, Golden Lion, Golden Bear, and Golden Leopard, and received an Honorary Oscar in 1995 for his masterful visual style. His trilogy—L’Avventura, La Notte, and L’Eclisse—remains a cornerstone of modernist cinema, exploring the discontents of contemporary life with unmatched elegance and introspection.

About the film: The Passenger (Italian: Professione: reporter) is a 1975 drama thriller film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. Written by Antonioni, Mark Peploe, and Peter Wollen, the film is about a disillusioned Anglo-American journalist, David Locke (Jack Nicholson), who assumes the identity of a dead businessman while working on a documentary in Chad, unaware that he is impersonating an arms dealer with connections to the rebels in the civil war. Along the way, he is accompanied by an unnamed young woman.

These are films with subtitles, part of SamaBhav International Travelling Film Festival now in its 7th edition.

The 9th edition of BEFF Babul Eco Film Festival 2025; brings to you the best and latest of green films from all over the globe . We have an interesting schedule lined up for you. The Worker is a darkly comic one-act play by Walter Wykes that explores the absurdities of modern work culture, gender roles, and human relationships. Through the sharp and witty exchanges between a husband, his wife, and a co-worker, the play examines the pressures of employment, the meaning of productivity, and the fragile boundaries between personal identity and professional obligation. Blending satire with a touch of the surreal, The Worker holds up a mirror to contemporary society—revealing how labor, routine, and conformity can consume the individual while leaving behind haunting questions about freedom, purpose, and connection.

Art and literature can be seen as extensions of the human mind. Very often they can reveal what lies within, sometimes visibly, and, sometimes, not quite so visibly. The movie club is (we hope) a fun way of looking deeper into the emotions, perceptions and thoughts that weave human relationships together or tear them apart. A movie may be treated as a true story or, alternatively, can be used as a tool to try and figure out what went on in the directors head when the movie was made. Either way, it’s a different way of understanding human behavior and relationships. In the end, by looking deeper into another’s story, we hope, perchance, to understand ourselves better.
