Remembering Andrzej Wajda
Wed Mar 25, 7:00 PM
Lamakaan
This March, Lamakaan will host a special series of screenings dedicated to the legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda, every Wednesday evening. The timing beautifully coincides with spring and the festival of Holi, Ugadi, and other festivals, making the event not just a cinematic celebration but also a cultural one—an occasion where the vibrancy of colors, renewal, and artistic expression come together. Just as Holi marks the triumph of joy and the blossoming of new beginnings, Wajda’s films will offer audiences a chance to reflect on resilience, history, and the enduring power of storytelling.

About the Director: Born on March 6, 1926, in Suwałki, Poland, Andrzej Wajda became one of the most influential voices in world cinema, shaping the Polish Film School movement and leaving a legacy spanning over six decades. He passed away on October 9, 2016, in Warsaw at the age of 90, but his contribution to cinema remains timeless. Wajda’s films often grappled with Poland’s turbulent history, weaving together themes of war, identity, and social struggle. His masterpieces include Ashes and Diamonds (1958), Man of Marble (1977), Man of Iron (1981), The Promised Land (1975), and Katyn (2007). Recognized globally, he received the Palme d’Or, an Honorary Oscar, and numerous lifetime achievement awards, cementing his place as a filmmaker who gave voice to a nation’s collective memory while influencing generations of directors worldwide.

Film Title: KATYN | 2007 | 115 Mins | Poland | Polish, Russian & German with English Subtitles.

About the film: Katyń (Polish pronunciation: [ˈkatɨɲ]) is a 2007 Polish historical drama film about the 1940 Katyn massacre, directed by Academy Honorary Award winner Andrzej Wajda. It is based on the book Post Mortem: The Story of Katyn by Andrzej Mularczyk. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for the 80th Academy Awards.

Wajda’s Katyń is the first screen portrayal of the long-suppressed and “highly controversial historical event.”

Screening followed by Discussion. All are Welcome. Entry is free and open to all!

Hyd Indian-SF Reading Circle
Sun Mar 29, 2:00 PM
Karthik Prasad
This event marks the second meeting of a new reading circle dedicated exclusively to Indian science fiction.

Founded with the aim of spotlighting the richness and diversity of speculative writing from India, the reading circle brings together readers interested in exploring how Indian authors imagine science, technology, history and the future.

Anyone interested to join our community can you use this link: https://chat.whatsapp.com/LPQMXSgLpLbCIMyqwfPN43

The discussion session will focus on Sultana's Dream and Padmarag, one of the first science-fiction utopian stories and one of the first feminist utopias by celebrated pioneering feminist, educator, activist, and Bengali writer Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.

Sultana, a Muslim woman living in colonial India, falls asleep and wakes up in a transformed future world: a utopia in which men rather than women are relegated to the domestic sphere. Women, now free to explore the outside world at will and pursue an education, run a peaceful and just society, using scientific principles to harvest energy from the sun and live in harmony with nature. Sultana’s Dream was published in 1905 in the Indian Ladies Magazine, the first English language periodical edited by, and targeted at, Indian women. Like the periodical, the story broke new ground.

As a pioneering work of science fiction and feminist utopian literature at the turn of the century, Sultana’s Dream is strikingly advanced in its critique of patriarchy, war, industrialization, and the exploitation of the natural world, speaking to the concerns of our contemporary world as much as its own. At a time when British colonialism was using the treatment of women in India as justification for colonial intervention there, Hossain’s story, in imagining a world in which men rather than women are kept inside, positions her protest against Islamic patriarchy within a larger feminist vision that takes on Western as well as Islamic forms of gender hierarchy. Her novella Padmarag is similarly utopian in its depiction of a women-run school and welfare center, and is both feminist and anti-colonial in its outlook. In both these works, Hossain seizes the critique of gender roles in India away from Western commentators and turns it against British interference, while also enlarging the critique to take on the problem of gender more broadly.

Sri Uday Kareti
The Secret Recipe is a 45-minute independent Telugu crime thriller that unfolds within the closed walls of a secluded house. Driven by silence, mood, and minimal dialogue, the film explores control, hunger, and moral collapse through a restrained yet unsettling narrative.

Relying on atmosphere rather than exposition, the story gradually exposes the violence beneath routine and ritual, allowing the audience to interpret what is shown—and what is withheld. The Secret Recipe is an intimate, slow-burning descent into psychological unease.

Gond Painting Workshop with Trishna Patnaik
India has a rich tradition of folk arts. The custodians of which are the many tribes that live in the interiors of various states. The Gonds, are the largest Adivasi Community in India and are Dravidian's whose origin can be traced to the pre-Aryan era. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and its surrounding States. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression kond , meaning green mountain . In the Gond belief system, besides Bara Deo (Great God), every hill, river, lake, tree, and rock is inhabited by a spirit and therefore sacred. Gond paintings are fascinating, where the artists express their faiths and beliefs, world view, their visual expression and sense of identity, both as a collective, and as individuals. The motifs are further associated with the rich repertoire of the community and strongly show the interactions with the cosmic, natural and social worlds of humans at multiple levels and contexts. Participate in the Gond Painting Workshop, get a chance to appreciate the art form and create you very own Gond Art masterpiece on cartridge sheets with acrylic colours.
